2015 2017

The 2016 GP2 Season, officially known as the 2016 FIA GP2 Series, was the twelfth and final edition of the FIA GP2 Series, staged across 22 races in support of the FIA Formula One World Championship.[1] The series' final season would see one returning team dominate the season, with several future F1 graduates in the field.[2]

The team to dominate the 2016 Season would be Prema Racing, with their partnership of Pierre Gasly and Antonio Giovinazzi duelling for the title.[3] Between them, the Red Bull Junior driver, and the Ferrari Driver Academy member would take nine wins, and head to the season finale at Yas Marina as the only drivers capable of taking the crown.[4]

Ultimately it was Red Bull backed Gasly who claimed the crown, beating teammate Giovinazzi by just eight points.[2] Sergey Sirotkin and Raffaele Marciello were their closest challengers come the end of the season, although they were tied on 159 points, 60 behind new Champion Gasly.[2]

Across the final GP2 campaign there would be ten different winners, with 26 drivers representing sixteen countries. They fought across twenty-two rounds staged at eleven different circuits, with the season opening in Barcelona in mid-May.[5] The series then chased F1 across Europe and Sepang, before concluding in late-November at the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.[2]

The 2016 campaign was also set to be the final season for the venerable Dallara GP2/11 chassis, as well as the Mecachrome V8108 engine, which had powered the series since its inception in 2005.[6] However, to keep costs down ahead of the series renaming to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2017, the new design was pushed back until 2018.[7]
