The 2020 Bahrain Post-Season Test, formally known as the 2020 Formula 2 Post-Season Test, was a three day test staged after the conclusion of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Southern Governorate, Bahrain on 8 - 10 December 2020.[1] The test would see all eleven teams that raced in the 2020 season take part, primarily to evaluate potential drivers for the 2021 season after they were all confirmed to be competing in the fifth F2 campaign.[2]
Jehan Daruvala ended the test as the fastest driver across the three days, recording a 1:41.686 on the second day.[3] The Indian racer also recorded an impressive tally of 210 laps across the three days, a total that was matched by his temporary Carlin teammate Dan Ticktum.[4]
In terms of the F2 rookies it was Hitech Grand Prix's New Zealander Liam Lawson who set the best effort, claiming a 1:42.177 on day two.[3] He was one of eight drivers who got their first taste of F2 equipment at the Test, while Roberto Merhi made his F2 return having not driven in the series since 2018.[5]
Background[]
After the Covid-19 Pandemic caused widespread chaos to the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, resulting in the final two rounds being staged at the Bahrain International Circuit at the end of November and early December.[1] As a result, the Bahraini circuit was chosen to host the traditional post-season test for F2, which would be staged over three days after the second of set of races in Sakhir.[1] In terms of circuit layout the F2 field would use the full Bahrain International Circuit, rather than use the experimental Outer Circuit which staged the 2020 Season Finale.[5]
Scheduled Plans[]
A total of eighteen hours of running would be scheduled for the Test, with six hours a day for each of the three days.[5] The first and second days would split the sessions into two three hour runs, the first beginning at 9:00 AM, while the second would start at 2:00 PM local time.[5] For day three the first session would also start at 9:00 AM, while the afternoon session would start earlier at 1:00 PM.[5]
Elsewhere, each car would be issued with eight sets of Pirelli tyres for the entire three day test, all of which would be the hard compound to reduce expense and allow better comparison between drivers.[5]
