The 2021 Jeddah Sprint Race 2, otherwise known as the 2021 Jeddah Formula 2 Race 2, was the nineteenth race of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Jeddah, Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on 4 December 2021.[1] The race would see Oscar Piastri claim his fourth win of the campaign, continuing his mid-to-late season charge towards the title after a late move on Jehan Daruvala.[2]
The grid for the Jeddah Sprint Race 2 had been set based on the results of the 2021 Jeddah Sprint Race 1, albeit with the top ten reversed.[3] Daruvala was hence handed pole position after his post-race penalty put him back to tenth in Sprint Race 1 results, with Bent Viscaal starting alongside.[3]
Daruvala made a clean getaway at the start of the race, darting across to prevent Viscaal from lunging down the inside of the #6 Carlin into the first corner.[2] However, Viscaal would stand firm and manage to keep his nose level with the back of Daruvala into the corner, before being muscled out by the Indian pilot on the exit and drop behind Piastri and Christian Lundgaard.[2]
At the back, meanwhile, there would be two separate accidents into the first corner, as Clément Novalak got out of shape on the brakes and hit Marcus Armstrong, taking out the Sprint Race 1 victor at the apex.[2] On the outside of the corner, meanwhile, Guilherme Samaia misjudged a gap to try and avoid an early braker and smacked into Alessio Deledda, taking both himself and the #23 HWA out of the race in the same moment.[2]
On lap five the race resumed after a spell behind the Safety Car in order to clear the incident, with Daruvala controlling the restart well to maintain the lead.[2] Further back Felipe Drugovich would line-up and complete a move on Jüri Vips, only for Vips to try and retaliate and hit the back of the Brazilian on the run to turn one, ending his own race.[2]
Debris from Vips' car, plus the abandoned #8 Hitech itself, would trigger a second SC period, while would remain out until the end of lap nine.[2] At this restart Piastri was able to go with Daruvala and force the Indian racer to go defensive into the first corner, with a lock-up for the #6 Carlin sending him wide at turn one and cutting across the inside of turn two.[2]
A five second time penalty would follow for Daruvala as a result of his off, meaning Piastri only had to remain tucked under the #6 Carlin's rear wing in order to secure victory.[2] The same fate would also befall Lundgaard as he tried to keep Viscaal at bay, cutting the inside of turn two having failed to make the apex at turn one, while behind Dan Ticktum was mugged, cleanly, by Robert Shwartzman.[2]
Into the closing stages and Piastri seemed to want to win the race on track, and would duly lunge down the inside of Daruvala to snatch the lead, before quickly escaping to build a healthy one and a half second lead.[2] Daruvala, meanwhile, was left with Lundgaard, Viscaal and Shwartzman in close proximity, before Liam Lawson crashed with two laps to go, bringing out a third SC.[2]
The race ended behind the SC, meaning Piastri would be unchallenged across the line to secure his fourth victory of the campaign.[2] Daruvala finished second on the road but with the field bunched up he fell to fourteenth, with Lundgaard dropping to fifteenth due to his penalty behind the Indian pilot.[2] Viscaal and Shwartzman hence made the podium ahead of Ticktum and Jack Doohan, while Théo Pourchaire, Enzo Fittipaldi and Guanyu Zhou rounded out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes to either the Jeddah Corniche Circuit or the field ahead of the Second Sprint Race of the day, which was staged after the conclusion of F1's qualifying session for the inaugural Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.[1] The grid for the Second Sprint was set by reversing the top ten results of the 2021 Jeddah Sprint Race 1, resulting in Jehan Daruvala, post penalty, being handed pole position with Bent Viscaal alongside.[3]
Armstrong Ace[]
Oscar Piastri had retained a comfortable lead at the head of the Championship table, having added a solitary point to his 179 point tally. Robert Shwartzman, meanwhile, had moved to second, a point ahead of Guanyu Zhou, while Dan Ticktum had inched closer to the Chinese racer in fourth. Théo Pourchaire was next up ahead of Jüri Vips, while victory had moved Marcus Armstrong up to twelfth in the Championship.
In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had likewise maintained their supreme lead at the head of the table, the Italian squad having moved onto 322 points for the season. Their advantage was hence sat at 95 points ahead of Carlin in second, while Hitech Grand Prix were a further thirteen behind in third. UNI-Virtuosi were next up ahead of ART Grand Prix, while DAMS had moved back ahead of Campos Racing in the fight for seventh.

Standings[]
Oscar Piastri had continued his march to the 2021 Championship with his fourth win of the campaign, which left the Australian pilot on 196 points for the season. That in-turn meant that Piastri held a 43 point lead over teammate and closest challenger Robert Shwartzman in second, while Guanyu Zhou was a further ten behind in third. It also meant that Piastri could claim the title with three races to spare in the Feature Race, if he won the Feature and saw Shwartzman finish lower than seventh.
In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing were in the same position as their lead driver, with the Italian squad able to take the crown in the Feature Race. Indeed, their tally of 349 points to second placed Carlin's 235 was more than the 107 points available to Teams in the final round at Yas Marina, meaning they had to avoid being outscored by the British squad in the Feature Race by more than six points to secure the title. Carlin, meanwhile, were holding a relatively secure hold on second, 25 points ahead of UNI-Virtuosi in third.
