The 2021 Monza Sprint Race 2, formally known as the 2021 Monza Formula 2 Race 2, was the fourteenth race of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Lombardy, Italy, on 11 September 2021.[1] Jehan Daruvala would claim victory in the second race of the weekend, as David Beckmann surrendered the lead right at the start of the race for the second time in the day.[2]

The 2021 Monza Sprint Race 1 had been used to set the grid for the Second Sprint Race, resulting in David Beckmann, who had started the first race from pole, ending up on pole for Sprint Race 2 after finishing in tenth.[3] Daruvala would share the front row with the German pilot, while Race One winner Théo Pourchaire would start from tenth due to the Championship's rules.[3]

In identical circumstances to the first race Beckmann would lose the lead almost instantly, unable to prevent second placed Daruvala darting ahead to claim the lead into the Rettifilo Chicane.[2] Behind, Bent Viscaal got the jump on Jüri Vips to claim third behind the #20 Campos, while the rest of the field made it through the Rettifilo without issue.[2]

Instead it was at the second chicane that contact would occur, as Christian Lundgaard was tipped into a spin after a tap from Marcus Armstrong.[2] Fortunately the rest of the field missed the #9 ART as it slid to a stop on the apex of the second part of the chicane, with the Dane able to spin around and rejoin at the back of the field.[2]

The opening laps saw Pourchaire and Oscar Piastri engage in a tense battle, the Frenchman making several faux-moves before finally driving around the outside of the #2 Prema exiting the Rettifilo.[2] Piastri then shaped up to respond but was forced to hold back, as Jake Hughes was squeezed into a race ending spin by teammate Alessio Deledda.[2]

A Virtual Safety Car would cover the removal of Hughes' stranded #22 HWA, with Guilherme Samaia also out of action after crawling to a stop in the pit-entrance during the VSC.[2] When the race resumed Robert Shwartzman would react fastest, getting in position to attack and pass Liam Lawson before completing a move on Vips to grab fourth.[2]

Into the closing stages and Beckmann and Pourchaire were both struggling in the lead group, with both coming under attack as their tyres faded.[2] Both would end up having to take to the escape road while defending into the Rettifilo, with those incidents seeing Viscaal pass Beckmann for second, and Lundgaard forfeit eighth to Guanyu Zhou.[2]

Beckmann would tumble down to fifth as Shwartzman and Lawson in the closing stages, as Daruvala swept to an untroubled victory at the head of the field.[2] Viscaal earned his maiden podium finish in second ahead of Shwartzman, Lawson and Beckmann, while Vips faced late pressure from Piastri and Zhou to claim sixth.[2]

Background[]

Ahead of the second race of the FIA Formula 2 Championship's weekend in Monza, held in the afternoon after the Formula One qualifying session had come to a conclusion, there had been time for teams to repair their cars and debrief their drivers.[1] As a result there would be no changes to the field for the second race, with David Beckmann again getting to start from pole position due to the reverse grid rule, this time for finishing tenth in the 2021 Monza Sprint Race 1.[3]

Pourchaire Performance[]

In the Championship Oscar Piastri had remained at the head of the table after the opening battle of Monza, although the Australian rookie's lead had all but evaporated in the process. Indeed, Guanyu Zhou had reduced the gap to just a single point after his podium finish, while Robert Shwartzman had lost ground in third, slipping 21 points behind his teammate. Dan Ticktum was next up ahead of Jüri Vips, while Théo Pourchaire had closed up to the lead group after his second win of the campaign.

In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had maintained their lead at the head of table, the Italian squad having moved onto 211 points in the first of their home races. Second placed UNI-Virtuosi had matched Prema's efforts in the first battle of Monza to keep pace, while Hitech Grand Prix had climbed to third as the morning's only movers. Carlin and ART Grand Prix then completed the top five, the latter having become the latest squad to break into triple digits.

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Four points for Oscar Piastri had been enough for the Australian youth to retain the lead in the Championship, and increase his advantage at four points at the head of the table. Guanyu Zhou had hence lost ground in second, but maintained his position, while Robert Shwartzman had inched closer in third, fifteen off the lead. Jüri Vips and Dan Ticktum then completed the top five, both yet to break into triple figures, while Jehan Daruvala had been the race's biggest mover as he moved towards the fight for fourth.

In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had increased their ever secure lead at the head of the field, the Italian squad having moved onto 225 points for the season. The fight for second, meanwhile, was being fought between three British squads, with UNI-Virtuosi heading the charge with 175 points, three more than Hitech Grand Prix. Carlin then completed the trio, fifteen behind, while ART Grand Prix rounded out the top five on 120.
