The 2021 Silverstone Formula 2 Race 3, otherwise known as the 2021 Silverstone Feature Race, was the twelfth race of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, UK, on 18 July 2021.[1] The race would see Guanyu Zhou claim his second victory of the campaign to re-establish his bid for the Championship, having grabbed the initiative at the start.[2]
Oscar Piastri would start the race from pole position, the Australian racer having claimed the spot with a stunning effort early on into qualifying.[3] His pole bid had been aided by an accident for teammate Robert Shwartzman, which had brought out a session ending red flag, as Zhou and Richard Verschoor just got their times in before the #1 Prema threw itself into the gravel at Stowe.[3]
With temperatures hovering midway between the extremes of the two Sprint Races it was Zhou who reacted best at the start, the Chinese racer surging ahead of Piastri to claim the lead.[2] Ticktum would also get a half look at the inside of the #2 Prema before Piastri swept across the secure second behind Zhou, the Brit having beaten Verschoor off the grid to claim third.[2]
The opening lap proved largely uneventful, with the drivers on the mediums quickly focusing on tyre preservation knowing that they would have to make it to lap seven to stand any chance of completing the race on one stop.[2] Indeed, Shwartzman, who had jumped Théo Pourchaire at the start, was the first to begin complaining about blistering as the track temperature climbed during the race, and was asking Prema to pit at the first opportunity.[2]
The Russian pilot duly swept in on lap seven, following in the footsteps of Ticktum who came in to try and undercut Piastri.[2] Piastri was in on the following tour, himself trying to get the undercut on Zhou, although on cold tyres the Australian racer was powerless to prevent Ticktum sweeping past when he rejoined.[2]
A lap later and Zhou led the rest of the drivers on mediums in to complete their stops, with the Chinese racer resuming still in control of the race, three seconds clear of Ticktum.[2] Verschoor held out for another couple of laps before making his stop, rejoining in fourth, while Jüri Vips assumed control as the leading driver on the alternate strategy.[2]
There would be some brief hope of a fight for second when Ticktum and Piastri came across the drivers on the alternate strategy, although Ticktum was able to keep the Australian racer at bay.[2] Furthermore, once the alternate drivers stopped the #5 Carlin would simply ease away from the #2 Prema, with Piastri instead falling into the sights of Verschoor as the race wore on.[2]
Their duel would rage to the chequered flag, with Piastri making some aggressive moves to fend off the #11 MP Motorsport pilot, particularly on the penultimate tour.[2] Piastri would ultimately hold on to third as they trailed Zhou and Ticktum across the line, the Chinese ace having kept Ticktum four seconds behind.[2] Behind the fight for third would be Shwartzman, Felipe Drugovich and a charging Vips, Pourchaire claimed eighth ahead of Lirim Zendeli, while Jehan Daruvala set the fastest lap en-route to claiming the final point in tenth.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes made to the Silverstone Circuit overnight after the Second Sprint Race, with the teams able to maintain their cars overnight and repair the damage from Saturday's two races.[1] Likewise, there were be no changes to the entry list for the third and final F2 race of the weekend, which was also to be the last in F2 until September.[1]
Piastri's Pull[]
Oscar Piastri had moved back to the top of the Championship as Saturday's running at Silverstone came to an end, with the Australian racer having the opportunity to extend his lead having already secured pole for the Feature Race. Robert Shwartzman, meanwhile, had slipped eight points behind after his non-score as he dropped to second, while Jüri Vips had climbed to third. Guanyu Zhou was next up ahead of Dan Ticktum, with no new drivers having added their names to scorers list.
In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had continued to make their bid to break clear, with the Italian entry some 33 points clear at the head of the pack. Hitech Grand Prix had, however, managed to keep pace in second, having matched Prema's score in the Second Silverstone Sprint, while UNI-Virtuosi had lost ground in third. Carlin were next up in fourth ahead of ART Grand Prix, while MP Motorsport had gained two spots as the day's biggest climbers.

Practice[]
Qualifying[]
Qualifying used the well established format for the FIA Formula 2 Championship, with a thirty minute session on Friday afternoon ahead of the Feature Race on Saturday.[3] All 22 drivers would venture onto the circuit during the session, and were allowed to complete as many laps as they could to set their qualifying time.[3] There was also a free choice of tyres, although drivers could not exceed their allocation of either compound of Pirelli tyres.[3]
