The 2021 Silverstone Sprint Race 1, otherwise known as the 2021 Silverstone Formula 2 Race 1, was the tenth race of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, UK, on 17 July 2021.[1] The race would see Robert Shwartzman sweep to victory after blitzing the start, as Championship leader Guanyu Zhou was spun around on the opening tour.[2]
Qualifying had seen Oscar Piastri claim his maiden F2 pole position, while tenth place for Christian Lundgaard handed the Dane pole position for the first Sprint Race.[3] Jüri Vips would start the race from second ahead of Roy Nissany, while Shwartzman was to start from fourth.[3]
The start saw Shwartzman make an excellent getaway, darting between Vips and the pitwall to storm into the lead into the right-hand flick of turn one.[2] Vips himself, meanwhile, would have the measure of Lundgaard and duly swept into second behind the #1 Prema, with the rest of the field making it through the first corner without incident.[2]
Indeed, it was in-fact turn four where the action really happened, with Roy Nissany hitting the back of Lundgaard and breaking his front wing and suspension, while Zhou spun himself around and stalled at the apex.[2] The two stranded cars would require outside assistance to be removed, with the Safety Car scrambled as a result.[2]
The race resumed after two laps, with Shwartzman bolting clear with Vips in tow, while Oscar Piastri battled with Liam Lawson and Dan Ticktum.[2] However, as that trio exchanged blows over sixth the race would be neutralised once again as Alessio Deledda spun himself to a stop at the exit of turn one.[2]
After another two laps the race resumed again, Shwartzman again making a break while teammate Piastri harassed Lawson for sixth.[2] The Australian racer duly elbowed his way past the New Zealander to secure the position at turn three, with Ticktum otherwise occupied behind, with the rest of the field making it through the opening moments of the restart without issue.[2]
With that the race seemed to be finally settling down, with Shwartzman remaining just out of reach of Vips, while Lundgaard dropped away and was told to push by his engineer.[2] The Dane was slowly getting back on terms with the lead duo when the SC was called upon for a third time, after Guilherme Samaia spun into the gravel.[2]
A couple of drivers, including Richard Verschoor would gamle on stops during the last SC intervention, with the race resuming with six laps to go.[2] Shwartzman would, for a third time, make a brilliant break at the head of the field to reclaim the lead, as Verschoor began to scythe his way towards the top ten from the back of the field.[2]
Come the end of the race Shwartzman had held Vips at arm's length to secure his second of the season, with Lundgaard watching on in third.[2] Felipe Drugovich was next up ahead of Théo Pourchaire, while Piastri and Lawson would keep battling to the chequered flag ahead of Ticktum.[2] Verschoor, meanwhile, would complete his late charge with a move on teammate Lirim Zendeli to claim tenth and pole position for the Second Sprint Race.[2]
Background[]
A month after the previous weekend in Baku, Azerbaijan, the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship arrived at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, UK, for its fourth round of the season.[1] The British circuit, which had hosted four races in 2020 was unchanged for the Series' 2021 visit, with the F2 field supporting the British Grand Prix once again.[1] Elsewhere, there was stability in the entry list for the fourth round of the season, with the three races in Silverstone set to be the last in the 2021 season for eight weeks.[1]
The grid for the first Sprint race of the weekend was set by reversing the top ten from qualifying, where Oscar Piastri had claimed a maiden pole position.[3] The Australian would hence start the Sprint from tenth, while Christian Lundgaard would be elevated to pole position ahead of Jüri Vips.[3]
Zhou Security[]
At the end of the third race weekend of the season it was status quo at the head of the table, as Guanyu Zhou had remained at the head of the field on 78 points after nine races. However, the Chinese ace's lead had been cut to just five points over the course of the Baku weekend, with second placed Piastri now with Zhou firmly in his sights ahead of the midway point of the season. Robert Shwartzman was next up ahead of Jüri Vips, while Dan Ticktum rounded out the top five with all of the top five within eighteen points of Zhou.
In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had moved to the top of the Championship hunt for the first time since the second race of the season in Bahrain, having moved onto 139 points for the campaign. They had hence moved twenty points clear of former leaders UNI-Virtuosi, who were themselves six ahead of Hitech Grand Prix in third. Hitech were level on points with Carlin but ahead courtesy of their three wins to Carlin's one, while ART Grand Prix completed the top five.

- Also Prema's 30th victory at GP2/F2 level.
Standings[]
A second win of the campaign had moved Robert Shwartzman to the top of the Championship after the opening bout at Silverstone, the Russian racer having moved onto 81 points. Oscar Piastri was his closest challenger in second, two off the lead, while Guanyu Zhou's pointless race had seen him slip to third and three off Shwartzman. Jüri Vips and Dan Ticktum then completed the top five, with no new names on the scoresheet after the tenth race of the season.
In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had maintained their commanding position at the top of the table, the Italian squad having moved onto 160 points in the first race at Silverstone. Hitech Grand Prix, meanwhile, had climbed to second ahead of UNI-Virtuosi, with the two British squads both on 127 points but the former ahead on countback. Carlin made it three British teams in the top five by occupying fourth ahead of ART Grand Prix, while HWA Racelab had remained at the foot of the table.
