The 2021 Silverstone Sprint Race 2, otherwise known as the 2021 Silverstone Formula 2 Race 2, was the eleventh race of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Silverstone Circuit in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, UK, on 17 July 2021.[1] The race would see Richard Verschoor claim a measured maiden F2 victory, as temperatures soared compared to the earlier Sprint Race.[2]
Indeed, Verschoor had finished tenth in the first Sprint to claim pole position, which had seen the track temperature some 20°C cooler than it was for the Sprint Race 2.[3] Sprint 1 winner Robert Shwartzman, meanwhile, would start from tenth due to the reverse grid rule for Sprints, with Jüri Vips ahead of him in ninth.[3]
Veschoor aced his getaway to instantly convert pole into the lead, with Marcus Armstrong starting from second simply unable to match the Dutchman's dart.[2] The New Zealander would, however, have enough to keep Dan Ticktum at bay to hold on to second, with the top eight getting away in grid order.[2]
An entertaining opening lap would see Oscar Piastri draw the eye, with the Australian racer fighting hard with Liam Lawson for fourth, getting alongside numerous times.[2] However, as their fight raged their would be a collision at the back, with Ralph Boschung running wide before spinning across the circuit and getting collected by Alessio Deledda.[2]
With two wrecked cars and debris across the circuit the race was brought behind the Safety Car, with Verschoor and Armstrong reeled back in to the pack as a result.[2] Yet there would be no stopping Verschoor either as the #11 MP Motorsport again stormed clear at the restart, with the rest of the lead group getting away in the order that they had lined-up behind the SC.[2]
Just two laps later, however, the SC would be required once again, as Jehan Daruvala took Bent Viscaal out after lunging at the Dutchman at Stowe before losing control.[2] The Indian pilot would manage to limp back to the pits for repairs, but would be hit with a ten second time penalty for causing the incident.[2]
The second restart was identical to the first, with the #11 MP Motorsport car of Verschoor simply escaping from Armstrong and Ticktum without issue.[2] Behind Piastri resumed his assault on Lawson, and ultimately forced his way past at Brooklands after a series of failed attempts, while behind Felipe Drugovich and Vips tussled for sixth.[2] Shwartzman, meanwhile, was stalking David Beckmann for eighth, until clipping a kerb at Abbey and spinning himself back to fifteenth.[2]
With that the race was run, with Verschoor cruising for the final laps en-route to his first F2 victory, over a second clear of Armstrong who never managed to get close enough to challenge.[2] Ticktum also had a quiet race to complete the podium ahead of Piastri and Lawson, while Vips kept Drugovich behind to secure sixth, with Beckmann stalking them to the line in eighth to round out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes to the entry or the circuit ahead of the second Sprint Race of the weekend in Silverstone, as temperatures continued to climb after Formula One qualifying came to an end.[1] The grid, meanwhile, had been set based on the results of the 2021 Silverstone Sprint Race 1 with the top ten reversed, meaning it was Richard Verschoor who would start from pole with Marcus Armstrong alongside.[2]
Shwartzman Surge[]
A second win of the campaign had moved Robert Shwartzman back to the top of the Championship after the opening bout at Silverstone, the Russian racer having moved onto 81 points. Oscar Piastri was his closest challenger in second, two off the lead, while Guanyu Zhou's pointless race had seen him slip to third and three off Shwartzman. Jüri Vips and Dan Ticktum then completed the top five, with no new names on the scoresheet after the tenth race of the season.
In the Teams' Championship Prema Racing had maintained their commanding position at the top of the table, the Italian squad having moved onto 160 points in the first race at Silverstone. Hitech Grand Prix, meanwhile, had climbed to second ahead of UNI-Virtuosi, with the two British squads both on 127 points but the former ahead on countback. Carlin made it three British teams in the top five by occupying fourth ahead of ART Grand Prix, while HWA Racelab had remained at the foot of the table.
