The 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, alternately known as the 2022 Formula Two Season, is the sixth season of the FIA Formula 2 Championship, as well as the eighteenth season of the second tier of FIA sanctioned single-seater racing under the FIA Formula One World Championship.[1] The season was set to be the longest in F2's history, with fourteen rounds and twenty-eight races, as F2 returned to its former race weekend format.[1]
Oscar Piastri was the reigning Champion having claimed the 2021 Championship title, and was unable to defend his title due to the Series' rules.[2] The Australian pilot duly moved on to serve as the test/reserve driver for the Alpine F1 Team, with teammate Robert Shwartzman also leaving F2 to take a testing role for Ferrari.[2]
Elsewhere, Prema Racing entered the 2022 season as the reigning Teams' Champions, although they would field an entirely new line-up as both Piastri and Shwartzman left the series.[3] They subsequently promoted reigning FIA Formula 3 Championship Champion Dennis Hauger to their F2 squad for the season, partnering the Norwegian ace with F2 veteran Jehan Daruvala.[4]
Background[]
There were several changes in F2 ahead of the 2022 season, with the main revisions coming in the sporting rulebook as the series reverted to its pre-2021 race weekend format.[5] Indeed, 2022 saw the Series return to its previously established schedule, albeit with a modification, with practice/qualifying on Friday, the Sprint Race on Saturday, and the Feature Race on Sunday, with all rounds run in support of Formula One.[5] This would also lead to an updated point-scoring and grid setup system, with the grid for the Sprint race set by reversing the top ten from qualifying, while points in the Sprint were to be awarded to the top eight finishers.[6]
Team Tilts[]
Elsewhere, there would be changes on the entry front for the 2022 season, as HWA Racelab ended their F2 involvement at the end of the 2021 season having failed to match their expectations.[7] The German squad sold their entry and equipment to Formula 3 stalwarts Van Amersfoort Racing, who became the second Dutch team to enter the F2 Championship.[8] VAR hence became the ninth team to compete in both F2 and F3, and officially made their F2 bow at the end of season test at the end of the 2021 campaign.[8]
There would also be a change at DAMS, as ex-GP2 Series pilot Charles Pic took over the ownership of the team from the Driot brothers, although there would be no changes to their operations for the 2022 season.[9]
Calendar[]
An initial fourteen round, 28 race, calendar was unveiled for the 2022 season on 15 October 2022, which was set to make the 2022 season the busiest in F2 history.[1] The season would open on 18 - 20 March at the Bahrain International Circuit in Bahrain, supporting the season opening round of the FIA Formula One World Championship.[1] The Series would then head to the Jeddah Street Circuit for the second round a week later, before a four week break before the Series began its European tour at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy on 22 - 24 April, the Series' first visit to the legendary circuit since it was renamed as F2.[1]
Another month long break would follow before the following round in Barcelona on 20 - 22 May, followed swiftly by the Series' annual battle around the streets of Monte Carlo on 27 - 29 May.[1] The Baku City Circuit would then host the sixth round on 10 - 12 June ahead of a three week break prior to the trip to Silverstone on 1 - 3 July.[1] Austria's Red Bull Ring would then stage its increasingly familiar F2 round on 8 - 10 July, before the Series enjoyed another month long break before making a return to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 26 - 28 August.[1]
F2 would then make its debut at the Circuit Zandvoort in the Netherlands on 2 - 4 September, before the European tour came to an end at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on 9 - 11 September.[1] The Sochi Autodrom was then set to host the penultimate round on 23 - 25 September, before a near two-month gap before the finale in Abu Dhabi on 18 - 20 November.[1]
Russian Rues[]
On 25 February 2022, a day after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Formula One World Championship organisers announced the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix and associated events.[10] As a result, the F2 Championship also cancelled its round at the Sochi Autodrom, while, following an FIA meeting, all Russian drivers and entrants would have to sign an agreement denouncing the invasion in order to compete in any FIA Championship.[10] The Sochi round was subsequently replaced on the calendar by a trip to the Circuit Paul Ricard on 22 - 24 July, with F2 supporting the French Grand Prix for the first time since 2019.[11]

Testing Schedule[]
Two tests were scheduled for the 2022 season, with the only pre-season test being staged at the Bahrain International Circuit on 2 to 4 March, two weeks before the opening round.[12] An in-season test was then set for 12 - 14 April at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, intended to break up the month-long break between the Jeddah and Imola rounds.[13]

Entrants[]
Entry List[]
The full 2022 FIA Formula 2 entry list is outlined below:
Season Report[]
Regulations[]
The F2 rulebook remained fairly stable heading into the 2021 season, with the Dallara-Mecachrome F2 2018 remaining as the Championship's base car for a fifth successive season.[45] This was done as part of various cost conserving measures implemented during the 2020 season, with the Dallara F2 2018 having been given an additional three season run as the series' base car, meaning it would remain in service until the end of the 2023 season.[45]
Technical[]
The F2 Championship of 2022 would see all twenty-two drivers use uniform Dallara F2 2018 chassis, all powered by identical Mecachrome V634 3.4l V6t engines.
Wheels and Tyres[]
Outlined below is the full range of compounds used by Pirelli, as they were marked for the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship:
| Pirelli Tyres 2022 | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
|
|
|
| Hard | Medium | Soft | SuperSoft | Full Wet |
The wet tyre compound and tread pattern was identical to those used in 2019.[46]
Pirelli would supply each driver with six sets of dry tyres and three sets of wets for each race meeting.[47] Of the dry tyres, each driver would be issued with four sets of the "prime" (harder) compound and two sets of a softer compound, predetermined ahead of the race meeting by Pirelli and F2 itself.[48] Both compounds of tyres would then have to be used during the Feature Race, unless the race was declared wet by the race director.[47]
Sporting[]
There would be a couple of changes to the sporting rulebook for the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, as the Series' returned to its original race weekend format after experimenting with it in 2021.[1] There were also modifications to the scoring system for the 2022 season, reducing the number of points on offer per-weekend, although the FIA Super Licence point allocation would remain the same.[6]
Race Weekend Format[]
For 2022 the F2 Championship returned to its traditional two-race per weekend format, albeit with a swap between when each race was staged.[5] Indeed, the series would staged practice and qualifying during the Friday of each race weekend, before the Sprint Race was staged on the Saturday, after the qualifying session for Formula One, with the grid formed by reversing the top ten from qualifying.[5] The Feature Race would then be held before the F1 Grand Prix on the Sunday, with the grid for that race set without modifying the results from qualifying.[5]
Championship Points[]
There would be a reduction in the points allocation for the 2022 season, with the top eight finishers in the Sprint Race receiving fewer points than in previous seasons.[6] Points would now be scaled 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the finishers in the Sprint, while the points awarded for qualifying and setting fastest lap in each race were halved.[6] In 2022 only 2 points would be awarded to the pole sitter, a single point for the fastest lap setter in each race, should they finish in the top ten, meaning there would be a maximum of 39 points available at each meeting.[6]
Outlined below is a full breakdown of the point scoring system for the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship:

| 10 | 8 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 1 | |
- * The fastest lap points were only awarded to the driver who set the fastest lap in the top ten of each race.
Anthoine Hubert Award[]
The Anthoine Hubert Award would also be available during the 2022 Formula 2 Championship, with those drivers completing their first full F2 campaign eligible for the title.[49] Otherwise, there were no special rules for the AH Award, with the highest placed rookie in the final Championship standings set to receive the Award at the end of the season.[49]
FIA Super Licence Points[]
Outlined below is a full breakdown of the how FIA Super Licence points were distributed for the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, based on final Championship position:
| 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship Super Licence Points | |||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | 9th | 10th |
| 40 | 40 | 40 | 30 | 20 | 10 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 3 |
A minimum of 40 Super Licence points, scored in the previous three seasons, are required for a driver to apply for an FIA Super Licence in order to compete in Formula One.[50] A driver must also be over the age of 18, hold an International Grade A competition licence (required to compete in F2) and valid road car licence, complete an FIA theory test on F1 sporting regulations, and have completed two full (80% or more) seasons of an FIA accredited Championship.[50]
There would be amendments made to the Super Licence rules in the wake of the condensed 2020 season, with the required total to gain a Super Licence reduced to 30 for the 2020 season and into 2021.[51]
