The 2022 Monza Feature Race, otherwise known as the 2022 Monza Formula 2 Race 2, was the twenty-sixth race of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Lombardy, Italy on 11 September 2022 in support of the Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio d'Italia 2022.[1] The race would see Jehan Daruvala sweep to victory ahead of Frederik Vesti, as a pair of opening lap accidents thinned the field early on, resulting in just thirteen drivers completing the race.[2]

Qualifying saw Jack Doohan claim pole position for the Feature Race, beating Liam Lawson by 0.126s as most of the decisive laps were set during the drivers' penultimate runs.[3] Behind them would be fellow Antipodean Marcus Armstrong, who beat freshly crowned Champion Felipe Drugovich to third, while Daruvala would start the race from sixth alongside Richard Verschoor.[3]

After an issue getting away from the grid on the formation lap Doohan would again have an issue getting away from the grid for the race proper, getting bogged down in the #3 Virtuosi and hence instantly forfeit the lead to Lawson.[2] The Australian racer was duly swallowed by the pack and fell to eighth as the field poured into the Rettifilo chicane, although his fall from glory would be overshadowed by events in the back of the midfield on the exit of the chicane.[2]

Indeed, the catalyst would be Ralph Boschung, who would cut across the chicane having had to bail on a lunge around the outside of the pack, only to scramble back on alongside Théo Pourchaire as the Frenchman was fighting with Marino Sato.[2] Minor contact would bounce the #10 ART into Sato's #4 Virtuosi, before Pourchaire duly bounced back into Boschung which sent the #15 Campos firing into the barriers.[2] Pourchaire would not fare any better as he was slammed into by Luca Ghiotto and Olli Caldwell after half-spinning in the middle of the pack, resulting in all four drivers suffering race ending damage.[2]

The Safety Car was duly scrambled to allow the incident to be cleared, although not before Doohan's race came to an end with contact at the second chicane, the #3 Virtuosi being collected by Logan Sargeant after the #6 Carlin had been punted by Daruvala.[2] That left six cars out of action after the opening tour, and with Tatiana Caldéron having withdrawn before the race, the field was already down to fifteen cars.[2]

The race resumed on lap six, with Lawson streaking away to try and establish a lead, with the rest of the field forming a line behind the #5 Carlin to try and take advantage of th slipstream effect.[2] Behind him, Ayumu Iwasa would try and fail to make a lunge on Jüri Vips into the chicane, only to be mugged by Daruvala on the exit, only for the race to be halted once again as Calan Williams had a nasty accident at Ascari, after being tipped into the wall by David Beckmann.[2]

The SC was sent out once again, with Armstrong leading a handful of cars into the pits to ditch their soft tyres, albeit after having to dramatically cut across the track to get into the pitlane, missing the pit-entry line on track.[2] A lap later and Lawson was in to make his stop, as was Drugovich despite the fact that the #11 MP Motorsport car had started the race on the mediums, and would hence have to spend 22 laps on the softs after the stop.[2]

Ultimately Williams' car was in too dangerous a spot to be recovered with cars on track, even behind the Safety Car, resulting in a Red Flag being thrown.[2] After half an hour the race resumed behind the SC, now with Richard Verschoor and Sato at the head of the field having not made their stops.[2]

With that Verschoor and Sato would try, and ultimately fail, to break clear, while behind Vips tangled with Lawson, earning himself a stop-go penalty for spinning the #5 Carlin around at the second chicane with a clumsy lunge.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Daruvala would elbow his way past Sato before sitting and waiting for Verschoor to make his stop, and duly took the lead when the #20 Trident finally made its stop with five laps to go.[2]

That would settle the race, with Daruvala cruising to the chequered flag a second clear of Frederik Vesti in second and Iwasa in third, who had spent the final laps of race trying to keep Enzo Fittipaldi at bay, only to be disqualified for a technical infringement after the race.[2] Fittipaldi hence completed the podium ahead of Dennis Hauger, while Beckmann beat Champion Drugovich to fifth.[2] Amaury Cordeel was next up ahead of Clément Novalak, Richard Verschoor claimed fastest lap as he charged back to ninth, while Vips ended the race in tenth ahead of Sato to claim the final point.[2]

Background[]

There would be no changes to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza ahead of the Feature Race, although there would be a change to the entry list, as well as one change to the grid, as a result of the Sprint Race.[1] Tatiana Caldéron was the main change, as the Colombian racer had been withdrawn from the race on medical grounds after her collision at the start of the Sprint with Olli Caldwell, leaving Charouz Racing System with just one car for the Feature.[4] Elsewhere, Ralph Boschung had been handed a five place grid penalty for causing a collision with Clément Novalak during the Sprint, on a grid that had initially been set by the results of qualifying staged on Friday afternoon.[5]

The Drugovich Dance[]

Despite failing to score, or even complete a lap, Felipe Drugovich would be declared as the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship Champion after the Monza Sprint, three races before the end of the season. Indeed, the Brazilian racer ended Saturday's running with an unassailable tally of 233 points, 69 clear of nearest rival Théo Pourchaire who had also failed to score in the opening fight at Monza. The Frenchman was hence set to spend the remainder of the season fighting to hold on to the runner-up spot, for Logan Sargeant in third had closed to within 29 points of the Frenchman, and had Antipodean duo Jack Doohan and Liam Lawson just eleven and twelve points further behind him.

The Teams' Championship, in contrast to the Drivers' was far from settled however, with three teams in major contention with one and a half weekends of racing left to go. MP Motorsport headed the charge, but their non-score in the Sprint Race meant that ART Grand Prix had closed the gap to just six points midway through the Monza weekend, while Carlin in third were just five further back. Behind the British squad there as then a 58 point chasm to Hitech Grand Prix in fourth, who had inched away from Prema Racing in their scrap to be best of the rest behind the top three.

Practice[]

Qualifying[]

Qualifying used the well established format for the FIA Formula 2 Championship, with a thirty minute session on Friday afternoon ahead of the Feature Race on Saturday.[3] All 22 drivers would venture onto the circuit during the session, and were allowed to complete as many laps as they could to set their qualifying time.[3] There was also a free choice of tyres, although drivers could not exceed their allocation of either compound of Pirelli tyres.[3]

Report[]

It was late afternoon by the time the F2 field were relased onto the Autodromo Nazionale Monza to start their qualifying session, with golden light flooding through the trees as the field flooded out of the pits as soon as the pitlane opened.[3] Indeed, the ploy for the entire field seemed to be the same, with everyone forming into a long line in a bid to take advantage of the slipstream effect, and hence shuffle around to not be at the front during their warm-up laps.[3] During the warm-up laps several groups would form before the first flying laps would be registered, with Felipe Drugovich the first to set a benchmark time in the first of those groups, recording a 1:33.322.[3]

The Brazilian Champion-elect would soon be deposed by Liam Lawson as the New Zealander charged across the line almost five tenths faster, with Enzo Fittipaldi trailing Lawson across the line to go second.[3] There would be a brief pause after that as drivers completed a slower lap to let their soft tyres recover, before the second runs began with the field still split into small groups around the circuit.[3] Lawson would improve to briefly retain his status as the fastest driver, only to be shuffled back by first Théo Pourchaire and Logan Sargeant, before Jüri Vips stormed to the front of the field by half a second, gaining a huge amount of time in the wake of the returning Luca Ghiotto.[3]

Jack Doohan then produced a last gasp effort to dethrone the Estonian racer, before joining the rest of the field in the pits for fresh rubber and a brief rest.[3] With eight minutes to go the field would return to the circuit, with one warm-up lap completed before the flying laps on fresh tyres began to come in.[3] Ayumu Iwasa would set the ball rolling as he went to the top of the timesheet before being deposed by Drugovich, only for the Brazilian racer to be replaced by the two New Zealanders in the form of Marcus Armstrong and then Lawson, only for those two to then be supplanted by Doohan, who returned to the head of the pack with a 1:31.641, a tenth faster than Lawson.[3]

Another cool down lap and the field began their final runs, with another en-masse improvement in the first and second sectors set to see the order get shuffled once again.[3] However, any hopes of improving would be ended by Iwasa, for the Japanese racer would find himself in the barriers at the Parabolica having been a tenth faster than Doohan to that point.[3] That duly saw everyone have to back off from their flying laps, with Drugovich the only driver to improve on that run, only to have his fastest time deleted after the session after he was found to have failed to slow down in the Parabolica after Iwasa's off.[3]

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Felipe Drugovich had increased his Championship winning tally to 241 points as the trip to Monza came to a conclusion, meaning his lead was sat at an unassailable 77 points ahead of the season finale in Yas Marina. Théo Pourchaire had retained his spot in second despite failing to score at all in Monza, and would have to fend off challenges from Logan Sargeant at the finale in order to hold on. Pourchaire was aided by the fact he still held a 29 point advantage over the American pilot, who was instead looking over his shoulder at the three drivers behind who were within nine points of him, as Jack Doohan, Jehan Daruvala and Enzo Fittipaldi had all ended the weekend in Monza on 126 points.

The Teams' Championship would be well and truly alive heading to the season finale in Yas Marina, with the top two teams level on 281 points after 26 races, and holding just a 23 point gap to the third placed team. Those two at the top were MP Motorsport and ART Grand Prix, with the Dutch squad deemed to be ahead by virtue of having five victories to the French entry's four, while it was still Carlin who threatened the pair of them in third. Furthermore, defending Champions Prema Racing had kept themselves mathematically in the hunt in fourth, 57 off the lead, but would need a flawless weekend in Abu Dhabi, and see the three ahead fail to score any major points, in order to do so.
