The 2022 Monza Sprint Race, officially known as the 2022 Monza Formula 2 Race 1, was the twenty-fifth race of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged in support of the Formula 1 Pirelli Gran Premio d'Italia 2022 on 10 September 2022 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Monza, Lombardy, Italy.[1] The race would see Felipe Drugovich get his first chance to claim the 2022 FIA F2 Championship crown, with main rival Théo Pourchaire needing to effectively win the race just to keep his title hopes alive.[2]
The grid for the Sprint Race was based off of the results of qualifying for the Feature Race, and saw Frederik Vesti earn pole position having claimed tenth in the Feature quali-session.[3] He would share the front row with Logan Sargeant, while Drugovich was to start from twelfth after being penalised for failing to slow during yellow flag conditions.[3] However, he would still be two places higher than main rival Pourchaire, who was to start the Sprint from fourteenth directly behind the Brazilian pilot.[3]
The race began in the late afternoon in Monza, and would see Vesti immediately sprint clear from pole to claim an early lead, aided by the fact that Sargeant bogged down and was slow away, and hence unable to challenge the #9 ART.[2] The #6 Carlin was immediately swallowed up by the pack instead, Jüri Vips, Ayumu Iwasa and Jehan Daruvala all firing past on the run to the Rettifilo, which would see the familiar squeeze result in some major contact.[2]
The victims were Olli Caldwell and Tatiana Caldéron, who ended up getting tangled towards the back of the field and were left with race ending damage, both stranded in the middle of the circuit.[2] That would trigger a Safety Car, albeit not before a major twist to the title fight occured, as Drugovich made contact with Amaury Cordeel while trying to elbow his way past the #25 VAR car, and ended up with broken suspension.[2]
Drugovich would limp back to the pits to retire, while the SC would stay out for three laps as Caldwell and Caldéron's cars were removed.[2] At the restart tried to bolt clear on the entry to Parabolica, only for Vips to read his move and break with him, before firing the #8 Hitech down the inside of the #9 ART to claim the lead into the Rettifilo at the start of lap five.[2]
An eventful restart lap saw the two VARs fight with Liam Lawson for ninth, with Pourchaire able to take advantage and move up to eleventh, sneaking past Cordeel as the Belgian racer himself tried to make his way past teammate David Beckmann.[2] Sargeant, meanwhile, would manage to scramble back ahead of Daruvala to reclaim fourth and harass Iwasa, while Vips would quickly break away from Vesti to establish his lead, seeking his first win of the campaign.[2]
With that the race began to settle, with a large number of drivers getting stuck in a train behind Iwasa, whose tyres would fade faster than everyone else's midway through the race.[2] Cue Daruvala taking advantage of the Iwasa bottleneck by getting revenge on Sargeant as the American racer tried to find a way past the struggling #17 DAMS, while firther back Marcus Armstrong and Richard Verschoor went wheel-to-wheel, literally, through the Parabolica and then through the Rettifilo in their scrap for sixth, a fight ultimately won by the Dutchman.[2]
Just behind them in the train was Pourchaire, who was now hounding Lawson for tenth as he tried to make his way towards the points and keep his title hopes alive for at least one more day.[2] Ultimately, however, it would be in the midst of his fight with Lawson that Pourchaire's hopes were struck a fatal blow, as a clumsy lunge from Pourchaire into the Rettifilo was repaid by Lawson, who ran the Frenchman wide on the exit of the corner and forced Pourchaire towards the gravel, with the #10 ART duly losing momentum and tumbling back down the field to fifteenth.[2]
With that the race, barring the plummet of Iwasa out of the points was effectively over, with Vips remaining out of DRS range of Vesti through to the chequered flag to secure his first win of the campaign ahead of the Dane.[2] Third would go to Daruvala ahead of Sargeant, while Verschoor crossed the line in fifth, but was knocked back to eighth due to being handed a time penalty.[2] Lawson hence claimed fifth ahead of Doohan and Beckmann, while Pourchaire ended the day classified in seventeenth having been found to have caused a collision with Lawson that had ultimately led to the end of his title challenge.[2]
All of that hence meant that Drugovich was crowned Champion with three races to spare, despite the fact that the Brazilian pilot had completed less than half a lap of the Monza Sprint Race.[2] His attention would hence switch to helping MP Motorsport secure the Teams' Championship, with the Dutch squad holding a six point lead over ART in a fight that was set to go through to the final round of the season.[2]
Background[]
Less than a week after the FIA Formula 2 Championship had broken in a new venue, the Series returned to one of its traditional hosts, with the Autodromo Nazionale Monza playing host to the thirteenth race weekend of the campaign.[1] The Italian circuit would be unchanged for F2's latest visit, with the DRS zones remaining down the start/finish straight, and on the run between Lesmo and Ascari.[1] There would, however, be a change to the entry list for the penultimate round of the season, as for the third time in 2022 a driver was forced to sit out a round due to a ban, resulting in the return of an F2 veteran.[4]
Naughty Nissany[]
The 2022 Zandvoort Feature Race had seen Roy Nissany pick up his twelfth and thirteenth penalty points for the season for an incident behind the Safety Car during the race, resulting in the Israeli pilot having to miss the Monza meeting.[4] The seat in the #16 DAMS entry was duly handed to former F2 ace Luca Ghiotto, who would return to an F2 cockpit for the first time since 2020 when he raced for Hitech Grand Prix.[5] The move came somewhat as a surprise given that Ghiotto had moved on from F2 at the end of 2020 to race in sportscars, although with FIA F3 staging its season finale at Monza alongside F2, DAMS were unable to convince one of the ten teams in that series to release one of their drivers.[5]
Doohan Pole; Vesti Front[]
Qualifying for the 2022 Monza Feature Race was also used to set the grid for the Sprint Race, although the Series' rules meant that those in the top ten positions in qualifying were reversed for the Sprint.[3] Jack Doohan had the honour of claiming pole for said Feature Race, only to be relegated to tenth for the Sprint, while Frederik Vesti was promoted from tenth for the Feature to pole for the Sprint.[3] He was to share the front row of the grid for the Sprint with Logan Sargeant, Jüri Vips and Ayumu Iwasa would share the second row, while Felipe Drugovich was to be the highest placed of the Championship challengers, the Brazilian racer set to start from twelfth after serving a five place grid penalty for failing to slow for yellow flags during qualifying.[3][6]
Drugovich's Destiny?[]
Victory from pole position in the Zandvoort Feature had left Felipe Drugovich on the verge of the Championship title with two rounds to go, the Brazilian's lead of 69 points meaning he could snatch the crown in the opening battle of Monza. Indeed, Théo Pourchaire would need a flawless finish to the season in order to overcome Drugovich's lead, having to win every Sprint and Feature race before the end of the season, and see Drugovich effectively fail to score. Logan Sargeant, meanwhile, was out of the fight in third on 130 points, and would likely spend the rest of the season trying to hold onto third with just nineteen points covering the American racer's top three status, and Enzo Fittipaldi's hold on seventh place.
In contrast the Teams' Championship was expected to roar on all the way to the final round, with the top three teams still separated by just 20 points after 24 races. MP Motorsport had the momentum, however, having climbed from third to the lead over the course of their home weekend, and would leave Zandvoort with a fourteen point advantage over former leaders ART Grand Prix. The French squad themselves had inched away from Carlin in third, but were still only six ahead of the British effort, with those three teams the only real contenders for the title.

Standings[]
Despite failing to score, or even complete a lap, Felipe Drugovich would be declared as the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship Champion after the Monza Sprint, three races before the end of the season. Indeed, the Brazilian racer ended Saturday's running with an unassailable tally of 233 points, 69 clear of nearest rival Théo Pourchaire who had also failed to score in the opening fight at Monza. The Frenchman was hence set to spend the remainder of the season fighting to hold on to the runner-up spot, for Logan Sargeant in third had closed to within 29 points of the Frenchman, and had Antipodean duo Jack Doohan and Liam Lawson just eleven and twelve points further behind him.
The Teams' Championship, in contrast to the Drivers' was far from settled however, with three teams in major contention with one and a half weekends of racing left to go. MP Motorsport headed the charge, but their non-score in the Sprint Race meant that ART Grand Prix had closed the gap to just six points midway through the Monza weekend, while Carlin in third were just five further back. Behind the British squad there as then a 58 point chasm to Hitech Grand Prix in fourth, who had inched away from Prema Racing in their scrap to be best of the rest behind the top three.
