The 2022 Yas Island Formula 2 Race 1, otherwise known as the 2022 Yas Marina Sprint Race, was the twenty-seventh and penultimate race of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, staged at the Yas Marina Circuit in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 19 November 2022.[1] The race would be held in support of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2022, two months after the round in Monza, and would see Liam Lawson charge to an impressive victory after wrestling control of the race from Richard Verschoor.[2]
The grid for the Yas Marina Sprint was set based on the results of qualifying for the Feature Race, and would see Verschoor emerge with pole position having claimed tenth in said quali-session.[3] The Dutchman was to share the final Sprint Race front row of the campaign with Lawson, Amaury Cordeel and Dennis Hauger would share row two, while the two main protagonists in the fight for the Anthoine Hubert Award, Logan Sargeant and Jack Doohan would do battle from fifth and sixth.[3]
The start saw a measured launch from Verschoor, with the #20 Trident catapulted into the lead from the grid, while Lawson slotted into second.[2] Behind it was more chaotic as Sargeant tried and failed to force a move on Hauger, Théo Pourchaire nudged Doohan and sent both wide, before Jehan Daruvala and Enzo Fittipaldi tripped over each other into turn two and ended up destroying their cars and the barriers.[2]
While Daruvala and Fittipaldi escaped uninjured the race would have to be red flagged in order to have the barriers repaired, resulting in a half hour delay before the race resumed behind the Safety Car.[2] After one lap the race truly got back underway with Verschoor acing the restart to grab an early lead, Lawson enhancing his hold on second, while Sargeant would find himself under immediate attack from Doohan.[2]
The top two, with Cordeel in tow, would steadily open up a margin to those behind, with Verschoor fighting hard to try and get out of DRS range of Lawson, but to no avail as the New Zealander remained glued to the #20 Trident's tail.[2] On lap ten the New Zealander fired the #5 Carlin down the inside of Verschoor into turn six to grab the lead, before fending off Verschoor's attempt at immediate revenge into turn ten to fully assume control of the race.[2]
Lawson steadily eased away, Verschoor having used the best of his tyres trying to break away early on, while behind Cordeel was similiarly beginning to fall back into the sights of Hauger behind, although the Norwegian pilot was being hounded by Felipe Drugovich.[2] Indeed, as the race wore on the Brazilian Champion was only getting stronger having nursed his tyres in the early stages, and with six laps to go the #11 MP carved from the outside of Hauger to to inside at turn nine to grab fourth, before sprinting clear to challenge Cordeel.[2]
Cordeel's hopes of a maiden podium finish would evapourate over the next couple of laps, Drugovich making up two seconds in two laps on the Belgian pilot, before slicing past the #25 VAR with two laps to go.[2] Hauger too would catch and pass the Belgian rookie before the end of the race, albeit having had to hand the place back after his first attempt had seen him lock-up and cut across turn six, meaning he had to hand the place back.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, it proved to be a very quiet second half of the evening for Lawson, who charged across the line nearly eight seconds clear of Verschoor in second.[2] Verschoor himself just held second, Drugovich having caught the #20 Trident just before they reached the chequered flag, with Hauger a few seconds further back in fourth with Cordeel and Seargent in tow.[2] Doohan was next up having spent most of the race hounding Sargeant but to no avail, while the final point was handed to Roy Nissany, who was the man who had benefitted most from the first lap chaos.[2]
Background[]
Two months after the battle of Monza the FIA Formula 2 Championship of 2022 would finally reach its climax, with the fourteenth and final round being staged in mid-November to complete the Series' busiest ever season.[1] The host of the finale would be the Yas Marina Circuit in in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which was unchanged after the modifications made to it ahead of F2 and F1's visit to conclude the 2021 season.[1] The venue would also host the post-season test in the week after the race, with all eleven teams expected to run their drivers for the 2023 Championship at said test.[1][4]
Walking Williams[]
Ahead of the season finale it was announced that Calan Williams would not be taking part for Trident, after the Australian racer and the Italian squad opted to mutually part ways after the trip to Monza.[5] It would take a couple of weeks for Trident to identify his replacement, with the Italian squad ultimately deciding to promote Zane Maloney from their FIA Formula 3 Championship squad after an impressive rookie season for the Barbadian.[6] Indeed, Maloney arrived in F2 as the runner-up in the 2022 edition of FIA F3, and would become the first Barbados registered driver to compete in F2 or its predecessor the GP2 Series, with Trident evaluating Maloney for a potential full time F2 seat in 2023.[6]
Correa's Cameo[]
Elsewhere, Van Amersfoort Racing revealed that they would also be altering their line-up for the season finale, handing their second seat to Juan Manuel Correa who would make an emotional comeback to the Series for the 2022 season finale.[7] Correa's last F2 race had been one of F2's darkest, the 2019 Spa Feature Race, in which the American pilot had suffered life threatening injuries in the same accident that claimed the life of Anthoine Hubert, with Correa having battled to recover and then restart his racing career.[7] His end-of-season cameo with VAR would come after the American pilot had completed a partial campaign in the FIA Formula 3 Championship during 2022, and would see the American take the wheel of an F2 car for the first time since the 2021 Yas Marina Test.[7]
The Third March[]
Felipe Drugovich had increased his Championship winning tally to 241 points as the trip to Monza came to a conclusion, meaning his lead was sat at an unassailable 77 points ahead of the season finale in Yas Marina. Théo Pourchaire had retained his spot in second despite failing to score at all in Monza, and would have to fend off challenges from Logan Sargeant at the finale in order to hold on. Pourchaire was aided by the fact he still held a 29 point advantage over the American pilot, who was instead looking over his shoulder at the three drivers behind who were within nine points of him, as Jack Doohan, Jehan Daruvala and Enzo Fittipaldi had all ended the weekend in Monza on 126 points.
The Teams' Championship would be well and truly alive heading to the season finale in Yas Marina, with the top two teams level on 281 points after 26 races, and holding just a 23 point gap to the third placed team. Those two at the top were MP Motorsport and ART Grand Prix, with the Dutch squad deemed to be ahead by virtue of having five victories to the French entry's four, while it was still Carlin who threatened the pair of them in third. Furthermore, defending Champions Prema Racing had kept themselves mathematically in the hunt in fourth, 57 off the lead, but would need a flawless weekend in Abu Dhabi, and see the three ahead fail to score any major points, in order to do so.

- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
- * Correa was handed a five second time penalty for causing a collision with Sato.[11]
Milestones[]
- First race for Juan Manuel Correa since the 2019 Spa Feature Race.
- Debut race for Zane Maloney.
- Fifth win for Liam Lawson.
- Carlin claiemd their seventeeth win in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
- This was also the 25th win for Carlin at GP2/F2 level.
Standings[]
As was the story of 2022 Felipe Drugovich had managed to extend his title winning lead in the penultimate race of the season, the Brazilian's tally having increased to 247 points as he sought to end his F2 career in style. Théo Pourchaire, meanwhile, had almost sealed second place, with Logan Sargeant the only man who could topple him, but would need to claim victory, fastest lap and see Pourchaire fail to score at all in the Feature Race. The American was instead at the heart of the five-way fight for third heading into the final day, with himself, Liam Lawson, Jack Doohan, Jehan Daruvala and Enzo Fittipaldi separated by just twelve points heading into the final day.
In the Teams' Championship there would be no real hint as to whom would take the title, although MP Motorsport would take a slim advantage into the final day. Indeed, the Dutch squad had moved six points clear of ART Grand Prix at the head of the pack, but Carlin had inched closer in third, their double score including Lawson's win seeing them move to within fifteen of the leaders. Various scenarios would see any of the trio take the title, with Carlin holding a slim advantage courtesy of having two cars starting in the top ten, although both MP and ART had one car apiece starting the finale in the top four.
