The 2022 Zandvoort Formula 2 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2022 Zandvoort Feature Race, was the twenty-fourth race of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, held at the Circuit Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands, on 4 September 2022 in support of the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix 2022.[1] The race would see a red flag and controversial Safety Car restart snatch the headlines, as Felipe Drugovich continued his march to the 2022 F2 title with an impressive victory.[2]

The Brazilian pilot was the man to beat in qualifying, with Drugovich storming to pole position in the #11 MP Motorsport car with a 1:20.713, almost a quarter of a session faster than Jack Doohan, his closest challenger.[3] Furthermore, Drugovich would see his title ambitions greatly enhanced by the fate of main rival Théo Pourchaire, the Frenchman ultimately ending up in sixteenth after causing one of two red flags during the session.[3]

Come the start of the race and Drugovich still would not be toppled, the #11 MP immediately streaking into the lead as the lights went out to claim the lead, with Doohan simply too far back to even consider a lunge into Tarzan.[2] Behind, Logan Sargeant suffered a huge lock-up in third and slid straight into the gravel trap on the outside of the corner, and would duly scramble back onto the track at the very back of the field.[2]

A minute later and Sargeant's race was over, for in his bid to atone for his error the American pilot hit the back of Ralph Boschung and break his front wing on the entry to turn seven.[2] The broken wing immediately got trapped under the front wheels of the #6 Carlin and sent Sargeant straight into the gravel, and with no front wheels on the floor the American pilot went skipping across the gravel and into the barriers.[2]

A SC was thrown to allow Sargeant's car to be recovered, although the damage that the #6 Carlin had done to the barriers at turn seven meant that the race had to be halted by a red flag on lap four, causing a long half-hour delay.[2] The race would resume on lap six with Drugovich leading the field away after touring around behind the SC for a lap, and the Brazilian racer would again ace the restart to stay out of reach of Doohan and the rest of the field behind.[2]

DRS finally came online on lap nine, and it was with the aid of the rear-wing flap that Doohan managed to get within striking distance of Drugovich, although he would immediately undo all of his hard work by locking up into turn one.[2] Doohan lost time but held second, and would soon opt to dive into the pits for his mandatory stop on lap thirteen, the lock-up having caused a huge flatspot on his front left tyre, one that could have potentially caused the #3 Virtuosi to suffer a puncture.[2]

Despite that Doohan had remained a credible threat to Drugovich, prompting the Brazilian racer to ditch his soft Pirelli tyres on the following tour in order to cover off the #3 Virtuosi and retain the defacto lead of the race.[2] The #11 MP would ultimately scramble out of the pits still ahead of Doohan, although he had been aided by the fact that Doohan, on cold hard tyres, had been stuck for half a lap behind a yet-to-stop Tatiana Caldéron in the #23 Charouz.[2]

With that there was barely any fight for the lead, barring a brief appearance for Richard Verschoor between Drugovich and Doohan after making his stop two laps after Drugovich and almost pulling off the overcut.[2] On lap seventeen race race was brought under the SC's jurisdiction again, this time after Marino Sato slid into the barriers at turn two when a wheel came off of his car after a pitstop, destroying the race of several drivers who were forced to wait until the end of the SC period to make their stops.[2]

The restart came on lap 22, with then race leader Liam Lawson leaving it until well down the start/finish straight to bolt clear, a tactic that caused confusion behind as several drivers went and then had to slam on the brakes to avoid the slower cars ahead.[2] In the chaos Doohan was punted in the back by Verschoor after slamming on the brakes, while Caldéron and Clément Novalak tripped over each other while avoiding the #3 Virtuosi as it slammed into the inside wall.[2]

Another SC was called in order to clear up that mess, and when the race resumed on lap 26 Lawson would bolt on the entry to the final corner, a far safer option for the rest of the field.[2] Several drivers would immediately pit following the SC, and once Lawson made his compulsory stop a couple of laps later the race was handed back into the hands of Drugovich.[2]

The fight for victory was over from that moment, with Drugovich cruising through the final minutes of the race to claim victory and a chance to take the Championship title in the 2022 Monza Sprint Race, four races early.[2] Second would go to home racer Verschoor ahead of Ayumu Iwasa, with Dennis Hauger in fourth ahead of Enzo Fittipaldi and Amaury Cordeel, the Belgian racer claiming his maiden points finish in the chaotic race.[2] He was followed by Jüri Vips, David Beckmann and Olli Caldwell, while Pourchaire made a late charge up the order to claim the final point in tenth, although it would likely not be enough to affect the outcome of the Championship.[2]

Background[]

The Circuit Zandvoort was unaltered for its second Formula 2 race of the weekend, with conditions remaining dry and stable for the Feature race.[1] Likewise, there were no changes to the entry for the second race of the weekend, while there had been no revisions to the grid after the Sprint Race, which had already been decided by qualifying on Friday.[4]

A Point Closer[]

Despite only claiming a solitary point for fastest lap during the Zandvoort Sprint Race it had been another significant step towards the Championship title for Felipe Drugovich in the Championship hunt, for the Brazilian racer's lead had increased to 44 points with five races to go. Indeed, his main rival had failed to score once and hence had lost one of six remaining opportunities to catch back up to Drugovich, and knew that the Brazilian racer would be starting the Feature Race from pole position. The result had also reduced the chance for Logan Sargeant to challenge for the title too over the remaining races, although he had managed to inch closer to Pourchaire in a drawn out fight for second.

In the Teams' Championship ART Grand Prix had seen their slim lead get slimmer after the Zandvoort Sprint, with the French squad holding now nine point advantage with five races to go. Their closest challengers had remained Carlin on 244, while MP Motorsport had closed right onto the tail of the British effort, with Clément Novalak's maiden podium and Drugovich's fastest lap point leaving them just two further back in third. Hitech Grand Prix, meanwhile, had eeked out their advantage over Prema Racing in the fight for fourth, neither effort being considered as contenders for the title with fives race to go, while Van Amersfoort Racing had remained at the foot of the table.

Practice[]

Qualifying[]

Qualifying used the well established format for the FIA Formula 2 Championship, with a thirty minute session on Friday afternoon ahead of the Feature Race on Saturday.[3] All 22 drivers would venture onto the circuit during the session, and were allowed to complete as many laps as they could to set their qualifying time.[3] There was also a free choice of tyres, although drivers could not exceed their allocation of either compound of Pirelli tyres.[3]

Report[]

Conditions were dry and warm on Friday afternoon as the F2 field ventured out onto the circuit for qualifying, with everyone heading out onto the circuit in the first couple of minutes as usual, albeit with no great rush to get into flying laps.[3] Indeed, so concerned were drivers about tyre use that their first prep-laps were incredibly slow, with most drivers coming close to lapping the circuit in over two minutes before they began pushing on their second preparation laps.[3] Once those were completed the competitive times began to trickle in, with Felipe Drugovich the first driver to set a real benchmark effort, a 1:21.915 as the first of the main contenders to cross the line.[3]

That effort remained the quickest until Jack Doohan swept to the head of the field with a 1:21.760, while Dennis Hauger and Théo Pourchaire were the only other drivers to dip into the 1:21.000s on their first proper runs, both slotting in behind Drugovich.[3] However, no sooner had drivers began to wind down and prep for another run was the session brought to a halt, as Pourchaire crashed out at turn three after being caught out by a snap of oversteer through the banked hairpin.[3] After a brief red flag period to make sure the circuit was clear of debris and the barriers were okay the session resumed, with everyone heading out somewhat quicker than they had before.[3]

Indeed, the pace on the prep laps was far stronger, and would result in some more shuffling to the overall order, Ayumu Iwasa and Logan Sargeant both managing to get ahead of Drugovich, while Doohan bested his effort with a 1:21.487 to remain at the head of the hunt.[3] An en-masse visit to the pits would follow straight after, before the first drivers began to venture back out with twelve minutes of the session left to run, all on fresh softs.[3] The first of the flying laps on fresh rubber would see Iwasa streak to the top, only for both of the Carlins to get ahead of him, before they were beaten back by Drugovich, who found a second on his earlier time to go back to the top of the timesheet with a 1:20.713.[3]

Doohan again came closest to toppling the Brazilian but fell two tenths shy, while home hero Richard Verschoor ascended to fourth behind Sargeant, moments before the red flags were being waved around Circuit Zandvoort for a second time.[3] The source of the red flags this time would be Jehan Daruvala, who had spun himself into the gravel on the exit of turn seven and got stuck, meaning his car would have to be retrieved by the marshalls.[3] That intervention ate up most of the remaining time, and with three minutes to go when the session resumed most drivers, including Drugovich, would decide to stay in the pitlane and save their tyres.[3]

A few would gamble on their used softs, but there would be no major changes to the order, barring a late run for Clément Novalak that got the #12 MP Motorsport into tenth, and hence reverse-grid pole for the Sprint Race.[3] Drugovich, meanwhile, would claim pole for the main event, 0.226s clear of Doohan, while his main challenger in the Championship Pourchaire ended up down in sixteenth after his earlier error.[3]

  • * Beckmann was awarded a ten second time penalty for driving in a dangerous manner during the Safety Car period.[7]
  • Vesti set the fastest lap of the race (1:23.078) but was ineligible to claim the bonus point as he failed to finish in the top ten.[6]
  • Nissany served a ten second time penalty for driving in a dangerous manner during the SC period.[8] The penalty points that Nissany was also awarded for the incident took the Israeli racer to the 12 penalty point limit on his race licence, meaning he was banned from the following round in Monza.[9]

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Victory from pole position had left Felipe Drugovich on the verge of the Championship title with two rounds to go, the Brazilian's lead of 69 points meaning he could snatch the crown in the opening battle of Monza. Indeed, Théo Pourchaire would need a flawless finish to the season in order to overcome Drugovich's lead, having to win every Sprint and Feature race before the end of the season, and see Drugovich effectively fail to score. Logan Sargeant, meanwhile, was out of the fight in third on 130 points, and would likely spend the rest of the season trying to hold onto third with just nineteen points covering the American racer's top three status, and Enzo Fittipaldi's hold on seventh place.

In contrast the Teams' Championship was expected to roar on all the way to the final round, with the top three teams still separated by just 20 points after 24 races. MP Motorsport had the momentum, however, having climbed from third to the lead over the course of their home weekend, and would leave Zandvoort with a fourteen point advantage over former leaders ART Grand Prix. The French squad themselves had inched away from Carlin in third, but were still only six ahead of the British effort, with those three teams the only real contenders for the title.
