The 2023 Formula 2 Championship, officially known as the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, was the seventh season of the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the nineteenth season of racing at the second tier of FIA sanctioned single-seater racing.[1] The season was staged fully in support of the FIA Formula One World Championship, as well as being supported itself by the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and would remain as the premier feeder-series for Grand Prix racing.[1]
The season was significant as it was the last for the Dallara F2 2018 chassis and Mecachrome V634T engine, which had served the series since their mutual introduction ahead of the 2018 season.[2] It was later revealed that the V634T enginge would be retained for the series' new car, the Dallara F2 2024 which was unveiled at the Monza Round.[3]
Background[]
There were two significant changes to the F2 picture ahead of the 2023 season, one relating to a new venue and territory for the series, and another to the technical rulebook as the series was used as a proving ground for future changes in F1.[4] The technical change would be the introduction of sustainable fuels to F2, with Formula Motorsport Limited, the organisers of F2, having signed a deal with Saudi Arabian oil firm Aramco to develop and supply sustainable fuels for the series, with an aim to run with 100% sustainable fuel by the 2026 season, when F1 would also run 100% sustainable fuel.[4] Under the terms of the "Memorandum of Understanding" that was signed between F2 and Aramco, the latter would supply the former with 55% sustainable fuel, specifically designed to run with the Series' established Mecachrome V634T V6 engine.[4]
The other major change of note would be the addition of a trip to Australia and the Albert Park Circuit during the 2023 season, marking the Series' maiden visit to the Australian continent in any significant form, supporting the Australian Grand Prix.[5] The move was met with some criticism, as the extra flyaway race, halfway around the world from the Series' base in the UK, would add a significant amount of expense to the costs of running cars in the series, and with the calendar expected to at least match 2022's record tally of 28 races.[5]
Calendar[]
The provisional calendar for the 2023 F2 Championship was revealed on 1 November 2023, which confirmed the inclusion of a round in Australia that had originally been revealed back in June 2022, effectively replacing the races in France that had been held in 2022.[1] The provisional calendar would hence match 2022's schedule in terms of length, with fourteen rounds and twenty-eight races, and would see the series exclusively support Formula One alongside sister series the FIA Formula 3 Championship.[1]
The season opened on 3 - 5 March, with a trip to the Bahrain International Circuit opening the season, followed two weeks later by the second round of the campaign at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia.[1] The series would then make its first ever trip to Australia on 31 March - 2 April, with the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne hosting its first ever pair of F2 races, the first time that any incarnation of F2 had raced at the street circuit.[1] The Baku City Circuit hosted its races on 28 - 30 April, before the Series headed to Europe for the first time in 2023 on 19 - 21 May with a visit to the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Italy.[1]
A week after F2s first trip to Italy the Series was to support the Monaco Grand Prix at the Circuit de Monaco on 25 - 28 May, with another short interval heralding the following round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 2 - 4 June, the season's only triple header.[1] Round eight saw the field head to the Red Bull Ring on 30 June - 2 July, followed a week later by the annual battle of Britain at Silverstone on 7 - 9 July.[1] Two quick-fire rounds at the Hungaroring on 21 - 23 July and Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 28 - 30 July would follow, before F2 entered a month long summer break along with F1 and F3.[1]
The season resumed on 25 - 27 August at the Circuit Zandvoort, supporting the Dutch Grand Prix, which was then followed a week later by the season's second trip to Italy and a visit to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on 1 - 3 September.[1] Two months would then pass before the season came to its conclusion, with the Yas Marina Circuit once again reprising its now traditional role as the host of the season finale on 24 - 26 November, with the circuit also expected to host the familiar post-season test to conclude the 2023 campaign.[1]
Rain Ruin[]
A week before the planned trip to Imola heavy rain would cause severe flooding and damage around the Emilia Romagna region of Italy, resulting in the FIA, Formula One and F2 agreeing to cancel the race weekend, with plans to replace the round later in the season.[6] Ultimately, however, F1 and F2 would abandon plans to replace the round, meaning that the 2023 calendar was reduced to thirteen rounds and 26 races.[6]

Entrants[]
Entry List[]
The full 2023 FIA Formula 2 entry list is outlined below:
- * At the final round of the season in Yas Marina, PHM Racing by Charouz competed solely as PHM Racing.[35]
Regulations[]
There was expected to be en-masse stability in both the sporting and technical rulebooks for the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, albeit with one major change to the fuel supply for the 2023 season.[4]
Technical[]
Ahead of the 2023 Aramco would take over as F2's fuel supplier, with the fuel company and Formula Motorsport Limited agreeing to use 55% sustainable fuel for the 2023 season, using a formula specifically developed to work with the existing F2 engine, the Mecachrome V634T.[4] The season would also be the last for the V634T engine as well as the base Dallara F2 2018 chassis, with all teams and drivers expected to use identical versions of the engine and car throughout the 2023 campaign.[2]
Wheels and Tyres[]
Outlined below is the full range of compounds used by Pirelli, as they were marked for the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship:
| Pirelli Tyres 2023 | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
|
|
|
| Hard | Medium | Soft | SuperSoft | Full Wet |
The wet tyre compound and tread pattern was identical to those used in 2022.[36]
Pirelli would supply each driver with six sets of dry tyres and three sets of wets for each race meeting.[37] Of the dry tyres, each driver would be issued with four sets of the "prime" (harder) compound and two sets of a softer compound, predetermined ahead of the race meeting by Pirelli and F2 itself.[38] Both compounds of tyres would then have to be used during the Feature Race, unless the race was declared wet by the race director.[37]
Sporting[]
There would be no changes to the sporting rulebook for the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, after 2022 saw the series return to its usual two-race weekend format, but with a successful switch of the Sprint Race being staged on Saturday, and the Feature being held on the Sunday of each meeting.[38]
Championship Points[]
There would also be stability in the scoring rules for the 2023 season, with Sprint Races remaining to be scored on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, while the Feature would be scored as 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1, with bonuses for fastest lap and claiming pole for the Feature.[39]

Anthoine Hubert Award[]
The Anthoine Hubert Award would also be available during the 2023 Formula 2 Championship, with those drivers completing their first full F2 campaign eligible for the title.[40] Otherwise, there were no special rules for the AH Award, with the highest placed rookie in the final Championship standings set to receive the Award at the end of the season.[40]
FIA Super Licence Points[]
Outlined below is a full breakdown of the how FIA Super Licence points were distributed for the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, based on final Championship position:
