The 2023 Hungaroring Feature Race, officially the 2023 Budapest Formula 2 Race 2, was the eighteenth race of the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, held at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Mogyoród, Hungary on 23 July 2023.[1] The race would see Jack Doohan secure a dominant victory, claiming pole position, fastest lap and leading every lap to boot, securing a rare Grand Chelem, as behind the Championship battle would be the main source of entertainment.[2]
Qualifying had seen Doohan grab pole, aided by the fact that he was the only driver to get three proper flying laps in the session amid two brief red flag periods, with the Australian pilot managing to best Victor Martins by 0.052s at the end of the session.[3] Championship leader Frederik Vesti would secure third, having been the man to beat for most of the session until Doohan's late effort, sharing the second row with main title rival Théo Pourchaire, while Isack Hadjar secured fifth ahead of Ayumu Iwasa.[3]
Background[]
Pourchaire Push[]
Frederik Vesti's lack of points in the opening battle of the Hungaroring had meant that he had almost lost the lead in the Championship, although his teammate's late move on Théo Pourchaire during the race had just managed to preserve it. Indeed, the lead duo were split by just one point in the Dane's favour after the first race of the weekend, while Ayumu Iwasa had moved within striking distance of both after claiming second and fastest lap. Behind, Oliver Bearman had enhanced his grip on fourth with his podium performance, keeping just ahead of Victor Martins, while race winner Dennis Hauger had been the biggest mover of the day as he moved into eighth from tenth.
In the Teams' Championship it had been a somewhat neutral day, with Prema Racing having retained the lead but seen their advantage cut by a single point. ART Grand Prix were therefore five points behind at the end of the Sprint Race, while behind DAMS had managed to inch clear of Rodin Carlin in fourth, although remained more underpressure from behind rather than looking to pressure the leaders themselves. Elsewhere, MP Motorsport had enhanced their hold on fifth, CAmpos Racing had moved back ahead of Van Amersfoort Racing, while PHM Racing by Charouz remained pointless at the foot of the table.

Practice[]
Qualifying[]
Qualifying used the well established format for the FIA Formula 2 Championship, with a thirty minute session on Friday afternoon ahead of the Feature Race on Saturday.[3] All 22 drivers would venture onto the circuit during the session, and were allowed to complete as many laps as they could to set their qualifying time.[3] There was also a free choice of tyres, although drivers could not exceed their allocation of either compound of Pirelli tyres.[3]
Report[]
It was dry and relatively warm as the field ventured out onto the circuit at the start of the session, with the field all piling out of the pits in the opening minute knowing that space would be at a premium in one of the most compact circuits on the calendar.[3] After a lot of jostling and a couple of warm-up laps to protect the fragile soft Pirelli tyres, the first serious times of the session were put onto the timesheet, with Frederik Vesti leading the initial charge with a 1:28.334, with Jack Doohan the closest challenger to the Championship leader, 0.2 seconds behind.[3] Victor Martins would also be a strong early contender as he claimed third after the first runs, with most drivers completing a cool down lap before pushing again.[3]
Vesti's next run lowered the benchmark into the 1:27.000s, the Dane setting three fastest sectors as he did so, while Martins improved and jumped to second, albeit still over a tenth away from the pace setting Dane.[3] Théo Pourchaire, meanwhile, would jump into third with his second run, knowing he had to keep as close as he could to Vesti given their tussle for the Championship, while Enzo Fittipaldi led Ayumu Iwasa and Dennis Hauger in a group that all leapt ahead of Doohan.[3] Several drivers, including Doohan were looking to improve on their second runs, although their efforts were halted by a red flag, thrown due to Roman Staněk spinning himself into the barriers at turn eleven.[3]
The session resumed a few minutes later with all of the field, except Prema, ART and Campos sending their cars out onto the circuit on their original set of tyres, although most drivers would abandon their efforts early and opt for fresh sets.[3] Doohan would, however, use the quiet to leap into third and within a quarter of a second of the still unchallenged leader Vesti, before he and teammate Amaury Cordeel also swept into the pits for fresh soft tyres.[3] With twelve minutes to go the entire field would be back on the circuit and jostling for position, knowing they would likely get two flying laps in, although with the tyre drop-off it was better to get it all done on the first run.[3]
The first runs on fresh tyres did stir up the order nonetheless, with Pourchaire finally managing to best his title rival, albeit by just 0.001s, before Vesti swept across the line to lower the benchmark to a 1:27.767.[3] Oliver Bearman also made great strides up the order, finally breaking into the top five with Jehan Daruvala in tow, while Martins' bid on his first run was ruined towards the end of his run which meant he failed to improve.[3] The Frenchman would, however, ace the second sector on his final run as the first of the major contenders to start their final efforts, and would provisionally claim pole by 0.037s.[3]
Unfortunately for Martins that would not be enough, for while Vesti missed that mark Doohan would storm from nowhere to secure pole, a 1:27.676 proving to be an unbeatable effort as the chequered flag fluttered.[3] Indeed, Pourchaire could only secure fourth, failing to best his run, while Isack Hadjar was a late improver to fifth ahead of Ayumu Iwasa, both easing out Bearman with their runs.[3] Daruvala was next up ahead of Dennis Hauger, while tenth place for Kush Maini handed the Indian pilot pole position for the Sprint Race.[3]

Milestones[]
- Fourth victory for Jack Doohan.
- Doohan secured his maiden Grand Chelem.
- Sixteenth win for Virtuosi Racing as an entrant in the FIA Formula 2 Championship.
Standings[]
A podium finish, combined with Théo Pourchaire failing to outscore him, meant that Frederik Vesti would leave the Hungaroring still at the head of the Championship hunt, and with enough of an advantage that he could afford a non-score in at least one Sprint Race and still hold the lead. Indeed, Pourchaire had fallen eleven points behind having been unable to get ahead of his title rival mid-race, while behind Ayumu Iwasa had just kept pace in third after his late-race triumph to remain 21 points off the lead. Victor Martins was next up ahead of Jack Doohan, those two having been the latest to have broken into treble figures for the season, while at the bottom of the table Roy Nissany, Amaury Cordeel and Brad Benavides had all failed to score once again.
In the Teams' Championship it was a dead heat at the head of the table, with Prema Racing and ART Grand Prix level at the top with 247 points with four rounds to go. The Italian squad were deemed ahead on countback however, having seven victories to ART's two, with those two the major and likely only contenders for the crown. Indeed, DAMS had slipped 73 points behind in third ahead, but were safely ahead of Rodin Carlin in fourth, while at the back of the pack points had once again proved elusive for PHM Racing by Charouz.
