The 2023 Hungaroring Sprint Race, officially the 2023 Hungaroring Formula 2 Race 1, was the seventeenth race of the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, held at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Mogyoród, Hungary, on 22 July 2023.[1] The race would see Dennis Hauger secure a dominant victory after snatching the lead off the grid, as behind fighting throughout the field stole the show and added significant intrigue to the title fight.[2]
Kush Maini would start the race from pole position, the Indian pilot have earned the position as a result of the reverse-grid rule, which saw the top ten qualifiers from qualifying for the Feature Race reversed.[3] Maini would share the front row with Hauger, Oliver Bearman and Jehan Daruvala would share the second row, while Jack Doohan would start from tenth after he claimed pole for the main event.[3]
Maini's bid for victory would unravel right at the start, as Hauger smoothly pulled alongside Maini off the grid, before pulling off an excellent lunge on the brakes down the inside of the first corner to complete the move.[2] Maini was subsequently mugged by Ayumu Iwasa on the run through turns two and three, momentum having been lost in his bid to keep Hauger at bay, with the Japanese ace having rocketed up from fifth on the grid.[2]
Maini's suffering continued later on during the opening tour, Bearman getting a superb launch out of turn six to grab third from the Indian pilot, while behind Théo Pourchaire scythed past Daruvala to claim fifth, while Victor Martins stormed around the outside of Isack Hadjar for seventh.[2] In contrast Championship leader Frederik Vesti would not make any ground on the frenetic opening tour, briefly getting ahead of Hadjar for eighth only to run wide at turn one and allow both the Frenchman and Doohan to slip back past.[2]
Hauger would begin easing away in the early stages, Iwasa opting to instead nurse his tyres, resulting in a DRS train behind the #11 DAMS throughout the opening stages that meant that the order was largely static, barring a revenge lunge from Maini that got the #24 Campos back ahead of Bearman.[2] Indeed, it was only when a clumsy move from Clément Novalak saw the #21 Trident take out Ralph Boschung and hamper Arthur Leclerc that the stasis was broken, with their removal plus a Virtual Safety Car resulting in gaps appearing up and down the order.[2]
At the restart Pourchaire would set the standard, catching Bearman sleeping and immediately darting past the #8 Prema, while Iwasa was told to push now that the team were confident that the tyres would make the race distance.[2] He soon pulled out of reach of Maini, but was barely making a dent in Hauger's healthy lead, while behind Vesti used the general upward trend in pace and disintergration of the DRS train to lunge back ahead of Doohan to reclaim ninth.[2]
With five laps to go Pourchaire would move onto the podium and provisional lead of the Championship, the Frenchman easing past a now fading Maini, with Bearman soon following the #5 ART through with little resistance.[2] However, a lap after taking third and the Championship lead Pourchaire would be relieved of both positions as Bearman fired past on the brakes for turn one, while Maini gifted fifth to Daruvala as his tyres began to fade badly and he slid wide.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Hauger swept through the final laps at a cruise to claim victory, ramping up his pace just enough to keep from being threatened by Iwasa to secure a dominant victory ahead of the Japanese pilot, who would claim fastest lap.[2] Bearman completed the podium ahead of Pourchaire with Daruvala trying to catch them, while Maini put up a ferocious rearguard action to retain sixth from Martins and Hadjar, whom had Vesti on their tail throughout although the Dane could not break into the points.[2]
Background[]
Silverstone Shakes[]
Frederik Vesti had retained the lead despite having been eliminated from the Silverstone Feature Race early on, although his lead had been largely wiped away with the Dane leaving Silverstone with a six point lead at the head of the field. Théo Pourchaire had done the majority of that damage, a podium finish ensuring he closed back onto the Dane's tail, while Ayumu Iwasa had also kept pace with the lead duo as he claimed a handful of points to remain within 24 points of the lead. Oliver Bearman was next up ahead of Victor Martins, who had shot into the top five with his maiden victory, while there were still no points on the board for Roy Nissany, Amaury Cordeel nor Brad Benavides.
In the Teams' Championship it had been a very good day for ART Grand Prix, with the French squad having almost completely eliminated the gap to the leaders Prema Racing after Martin's maximum score and Pourchaire's third place. Indeed, just six points would separate the two at the end of the weekend, while DAMS in third had slipped 73 points away as the battle was evolving into a two-horse race. Rodin Carlin was next up ahead of MP Motorsport, Van Amersfoort Racing held sixth from Campos Racing, while Invicta Virtuosi Racing had moved ahead of Hitech Pulse-Eight.

Standings[]
Frederik Vesti's lack of points in the opening battle of the Hungaroring had meant that he had almost lost the lead in the Championship, although his teammate's late move on Théo Pourchaire during the race had just managed to preserve it. Indeed, the lead duo were split by just one point in the Dane's favour after the first race of the weekend, while Ayumu Iwasa had moved within striking distance of both after claiming second and fastest lap. Behind, Oliver Bearman had enhanced his grip on fourth with his podium performance, keeping just ahead of Victor Martins, while race winner Dennis Hauger had been the biggest mover of the day as he moved into eighth from tenth.
In the Teams' Championship it had been a somewhat neutral day, with Prema Racing having retained the lead but seen their advantage cut by a single point. ART Grand Prix were therefore five points behind at the end of the Sprint Race, while behind DAMS had managed to inch clear of Rodin Carlin in fourth, although remained more underpressure from behind rather than looking to pressure the leaders themselves. Elsewhere, MP Motorsport had enhanced their hold on fifth, CAmpos Racing had moved back ahead of Van Amersfoort Racing, while PHM Racing by Charouz remained pointless at the foot of the table.
