2023 2025

The 2024 Formula 2 Championship, officially known as the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship, was the eighth season of the FIA Formula 2 Championship and the twentieth season of racing at the second tier of FIA sanctioned single-seater racing.[1] The season was staged fully in support of the FIA Formula One World Championship, as well as being supported itself by the FIA Formula 3 Championship, in what was the start of a new era for the series.[1]

The season would see the introduction of the Dallara F2 2024 as the series' base car, which was focused with a more ground-effect style design to better match the current specification used in Formula One, F2's parent series.[2] That new design was twinned with the existing Mecachrome V634T engine that had been used in the series' previous car, the Dallara F2 2018, with the other technical change for the series coming in the use of 55% sustainable fuel developed by Aramco.[3]

An fourteen round calendar, featuring 28 races, would be planned for the campaign, with the series starting on 1 March 2024 at the Bahrain Sprint Race, before concluding at the Yas Marina Feature Race on 8 December 2024.[1] The season would also see the series' debut at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar, which had previously hosted the GP2 Asia Series, a return to the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari after the 2023 races at the circuit had been cancelled, and the removal of Circuit Zandvoort from the calendar.[1]

Background[]

For the 2024 season the main interest in the paddock would be the series' new base chassis, the Dallara F2 2024 which had been unveiled at the 2023 Monza Sprint Race with elements of a design based on the current Formula One specification.[2] The new car featured revised bodywork all around to reflect the F1 concept design released ahead of the 2022 F1 season, a less powerful ground-effect design to reflect the handling of an F1 car, updated safety innovations and monocoque and updated sustainable fuel from Aramco.[2] The car was shaken-down in July by Tatiana Caldéron and delivered to the various teams during the winter break in two stages, with the series arranging a combined shakedown session prior to the pre-season test.[2]

Calendar[]

A provisional calendar for the 2024 edition of the F2 Championship was released on 4 August 2023, which outlined a 14 round calendar with 28 races planned for the campaign, which would run from February until December in support of Formula One.[1] The season was to open at the Bahrain International Circuit on 29 February 2024, with the series staying in the Middle East for the following round at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia.[1] After its successful debut the trip to the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, would then serve as the third round of the season on 22 - 24 March, before the European campaign opened with the return of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy, for the fourth round on 17 - 19 May.[1]

The annual trip to Monte Carlo would come on 23 - 26 May, before the series had a one month break before a visit to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 21 - 23 June.[1] A quick fure run would then see trips to the Red Bull Ring on 28 - 30 June and then Silverstone on 5 - 7 July, before heading to the Hungaroring on 19 - 21 July.[1] The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps would then host the final round before the summer break on 26 - 28 July, ahead of the end of the full European season on 30 August - 1 September at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and the Italian Grand Prix.[1]

The Baku City Circuit would host round twelve on 13 - 15 September, before a long break until the penultimate round of the season, the debut for the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar on 29 November - 1 December, which had previously hosted the GP2 Asia Series.[1] The season would then conclude at its traditional finale venue, the Yas Marina Circuit on 6 - 8 December 2024.[1]

Regulations[]

There was expected to be en-masse stability in both the sporting and technical rulebooks for the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship, albeit with one major change to the fuel supply for the 2024 season.[41]

Technical[]

Ahead of the 2024 Aramco would take over as F2's fuel supplier, with the fuel company and Formula Motorsport Limited agreeing to use 55% sustainable fuel for the 2024 season, using a formula specifically developed to work with the existing F2 engine, the Mecachrome V634T.[41] The season would also be the last for the V634T engine as well as the base Dallara F2 2024 chassis, with all teams and drivers expected to use identical versions of the engine and car throughout the 2024 campaign.[42]

Wheels and Tyres[]

Outlined below is the full range of compounds used by Pirelli, as they were marked for the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship:

Pirelli Tyres 2024
Pirelli 2019 Hard Pirelli 2019 Medium Pirelli 2019 Soft Pirelli 2019 Ultra Soft Pirelli 2019 Wet
Hard Medium Soft SuperSoft Full Wet

The wet tyre compound and tread pattern was identical to those used in 2022.[43]

Pirelli would supply each driver with six sets of dry tyres and three sets of wets for each race meeting.[44] Of the dry tyres, each driver would be issued with four sets of the "prime" (harder) compound and two sets of a softer compound, predetermined ahead of the race meeting by Pirelli and F2 itself.[45] Both compounds of tyres would then have to be used during the Feature Race, unless the race was declared wet by the race director.[44]

Sporting[]

There would be no changes to the sporting rulebook for the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship, after 2022 saw the series return to its usual two-race weekend format, but with a successful switch of the Sprint Race being staged on Saturday, and the Feature being held on the Sunday of each meeting.[45]

Championship Points[]

There would also be stability in the scoring rules for the 2024 season, with Sprint Races remaining to be scored on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, while the Feature would be scored as 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1, with bonuses for fastest lap and claiming pole for the Feature.[46]

Outlined below is a full breakdown of the point scoring system for the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship:

2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship Points Table
Feature Race
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
25 18 15 12 10 8 6 4 2 1

2 1
Sprint Race
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th Fastest Lap*
10 8 6 5 4 3 2 1 1
  • * The fastest lap points were only awarded to the driver who set the fastest lap in the top ten of each race.

Anthoine Hubert Award[]

The Anthoine Hubert Award would also be available during the 2024 Formula 2 Championship, with those drivers completing their first full F2 campaign eligible for the title.[47] Otherwise, there were no special rules for the AH Award, with the highest placed rookie in the final Championship standings set to receive the Award at the end of the season.[47]

FIA Super Licence Points[]

Outlined below is a full breakdown of the how FIA Super Licence points were distributed for the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship, based on final Championship position:

2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship Super Licence Points
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
40 40 40 30 20 10 8 6 4 3

A minimum of 40 Super Licence points, scored in the previous three seasons, are required for a driver to apply for an FIA Super Licence in order to compete in Formula One.[48] A driver must also be over the age of 18, hold an International Grade A competition licence (required to compete in F2) and valid road car licence, complete an FIA theory test on F1 sporting regulations, and have completed two full (80% or more) seasons of an FIA accredited Championship.[48]
