Christian Lundgaard (born 23 July 2001 in Hedensted, Midtjylland, Denmark) is a Danish racing driver, who competes for ART Grand Prix during the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] The son of 2000 European Rally Champion Henrik Lundgaard, Lundgaard would make his F2 debut at the end 2019 Yas Marina Feature Race with Trident, before signing for ART for the 2020 season.[2]
Lundgaard is a member of the Renault Sport Academy, having signed with them in 2017.[3]
Background[]
Lundgaard's career began in karting, with the Dane collecting three Championship titles across Scandinavia and Europe between 2012 and 2016.[4] After appearing on a list of top karting talents published by Motorsport.com at the end of 2016, Lundgaard secured a seat in the SMP F4 Championship as well as the Spanish F4 Championship for 2017.[4][5] The Dane was also approached by the Renault Sport Academy in March 2017, and duly signed up to be part of their driver development programme.[3]
Renault Recommendations: 2017-2019[]
With Renault backing Lundgaard would go on to claim the SMP F4 Championship in 2017, claiming nine wins, while also taking the Spanish F4 title.[4] Renault duly moved him into the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and NEC for 2018, with the Dane duly claiming the runner-up spot in the former as top rookie.[4] He also made his debut in the GP3 Series at the end of the season, before Renault helped him to secure a full season in the renamed FIA Formula 3 Championship for 2019.[4]
Lundgaard's maiden campaign in the newly named FIA F3 Championship saw him compete with ART Grand Prix, with the Dane picking up a single race victory en-route to sixth in the Championship.[4] He would also make his debut at the Macau Grand Prix at the end of the season, claiming fourth in the famed F3 race.[4]
Formula Two History[]
Lundgaard was offered a drive with Trident at the end of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship, taking over the #21 car from Ralph Boschung for the season finale in Abu Dhabi.[2] The Dane would finish outside of the points in both races but showed relatively strong pace, and hence secured a seat in the 2019 Yas Marina Test with ART Grand Prix.[6][7] After a strong showing alongside Marcus Armstrong, Lundgaard was signed by ART for a full F2 campaign in 2020, partnering the New Zealander for the season.[1]
A Danish Debutante: 2020[]
Lundgaard would have a difficult start to the season, after he and several Renault Sport Academy and ART personnel were quarantined in Tenerife, Spain, shortly before the 2020 Bahrain Test, preventing the Dane from taking part.[8]
