Daniel Ticktum (born 8 June 1999 in London, UK) is a British born racing driver who competes with Carlin in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] A Williams Racing Driver Academy member and former alumni of the Red Bull Junior Team, Ticktum originally made his F2 debut at the end of the 2018 season with Arden International.[2][3]

Ticktum would secure a full season seat in the F2 Championship in 2020, when the Brit signed up to join Sean Gelael at DAMS.[4] The Brit would go on to claim a single victory in his rookie season, with three further podium finishes leaving him eleventh in the Championship.[5]

Ticktum's junior career prior to F2 proved to be rather controversial despite his various successes, with the Brit serving part of a two year ban for an incident in 2015.[6] There would be more controversy regarding Ticktum's conduct over the radio in F2, with the Brit particularly vocal during races.[7]

Background[]

Ticktum began his racing career in karting at the age of eight, racing though the various categories until 2014, when he would finish as Vice Champion in the WSK Masters series. He duly signed up to join the recently formed MSA Formula and would take an early lead in the 2015 Championship while forming an intense rivalry with Ricky Collard.[6] That, ultimately, came to a head at the Silverstone round, where Ticktum overtook ten cars during a safety car in order to deliberately crash into Collard.[6]

As a result Ticktum would receive a two-year ban from competing in any motorsport event, effective from December 2015, although the second year was suspended.[6]

Ban Bounce-back: 2017 - 2019[]

Ticktum would make his racing return towards the end of 2016, miraculously obtaining a seat in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Carlin for the season finale.[8] The Brit also secured a drive at the Macau Grand Prix, before becoming a member of the Red Bull Junior Team in January 2017.[9] With Red Bull backing Ticktum would secure a seat in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 in 2017.[9]

One win in Formula Renault in 2017 would see Ticktum finish in seventh overall, although he would end the season on a high by sweeping to victory at the Macau Grand Prix.[10] He would also make a handful of appearances in the GP3 Series, claiming a podium in the final race of the season, before obtaining a full season seat in the European F3 Championship for 2018.[11][12] It would be another controversial season for Ticktum, in which he would imply that Championship rival Mick Schumacher was getting better equipment, before ultimately finishing as runner-up to the German come the end of the season.[13]

Regardless, Ticktum would again head to Macau and claim his second win in the Grand Prix, before securing his debut in Formula 2 at the end of the 2018 season.[2]

Formula 2 History[]

Ticktum would get the chance to join the FIA Formula 2 Championship ahead of the 2018 season finale in Yas Marina, with Arden International looking for a replacement for Maximilian Günther after the German switched to Formula E.[14] He duly signed up to partner Nirei Fukuzumi for the final two races of the season, although would fail to score points in either race.[2][15] Yet, in-spite of the fact that Arden had two potential race seats on offer for 2019, Ticktum moved into the Japanese Super Formula Championship at the behest of Red Bull.[16]

DAMS Demands: 2020[]

After losing his Red Bull support during 2019, Ticktum received support from the Williams F1 Team, who signed the Brit to their Racing Driver Academy for 2020, making him a development driver for the season.[17][3] Williams' backing aided Ticktum in securing a full-time return to the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2020, with the Brit signing with DAMS alongside Sean Gelael shortly before his Williams deal was announced.[4]

Carlin's Champion?: 2021[]

For 2021 Ticktum would move across to the Carlin squad, having partnered Jehan Daruvala at the 2020 Bahrain Post-Season Test for the British team.[1] After a promising run to fourth in the Pre-Season Test, Ticktum would open the 2021 season with an eighth place in the 2021 Bahrain Sprint Race 1, having spun Richard Verschoor out early on.[18] More contact would follow in the Bahrain Sprint 2, this time a terminal collision with Robert Shwartzman at the start, before Ticktum battled his way onto the podium in the Bahrain Feature with a late move on Oscar Piastri for second.[19]

Post Formula 2 Career[]

For 2019 Ticktum would race in the 2019 Super Formula Championship, alongside multiple other programmes in a bid to enhance his tally of FIA Super Licence points.[16] Yet, it proved to be a poor season for the Brit, who was dropped from Super Formula after just three races, having lost his Red Bull Junior Team support.[17] He would, however, get his debut in a Formula One car with Red Bull during the 2019 season, before securing a development driver deal with the Williams F1 Team for the 2020 season.[3]
