Ralph Boschung (born 23 September 1997 in Monthey, Valais, Switzerland) is a Swiss racing driver who competes for Campos Racing in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] Boschung originally debuted in the F2 Championship in 2017 with Campos and has competed in every season since the GP2 Series was renamed, but had not had an auspicious career prior to that point.[2]
Boschung's maiden F2 campaign with Campos would see him partner Stefano Coletti initially, although he would get various teammates across the season.[2] A relatively quiet campaign saw Boschung score eleven points en-route to nineteenth, before being replaced ahead of the final round by Lando Norris.[3]
For 2018 Boschung secured a seat with MP Motorsport for the campaign, initially partnered by Roberto Merhi with whom he had raced in 2017.[4] Five consecutive retirements and budget issues would severely hamper his sophomore season, resulting in Niko Kari replacing the Swiss racer before the end of the campaign.[5]
The 2019 season saw Boschung move to Trident for at least half the season, with his budget once again questionable.[6] Indeed, the Swiss racer would miss a third of the season due to a lack of funds, ending the season with just three points.[7]
Boschung missed out on a seat for the 2020 season and instead focused on securing funds for a full tilt at the Championship in 2021.[8] However, after securing a seat for the 2021 season Boschung would get the chance to appear at the final round of the 2020 season in Sakhir, his cameo coming in place of Jack Aitken at Campos.[8]
Campos duly confirmed that Boschung would race for them in 2021, partnering the Swiss pilot with Gianluca Petecof, before a host of other drivers would take over the sister car.[8] A better campaign for Boschung saw him become a semi-regular point scorer, before claiming two podium finishes en-route to tenth in the Championship.[9]
Boschung retained his F2 status for the 2022 season, with Campos signing him for a second season in partnership with Olli Caldwell.[10]
Background[]
Boschung's career began in karting, before the Swiss racer moved to car racing in 2012, gaining a seat in the Formula BMW Talent Cup.[1] A strong debut campaign saw Boschung end the season fifth, earning him a promotion to the w:c:motorsport:ADAC Formel Masters for 2013.[1] Another good season saw Boschung earn a second season in the ADAC series for 2014, with the Swiss racer matching his 2013 exploits.[1]
GP Battles[]
Boschung earned another move in 2015, joining the GP3 Series with Jenzer Motorsport, a Swiss owned team.[1] However, while Boschung proved to be a consistent point scorer, he never threatened a win, prompting a move to Koiranen GP for 2016.[1] A stronger start to the season saw Boschung claim his first GP3 win, before his campaign was interrupted by a lack of funding.[1]
Formula 2 History[]
Despite having rumoured funding issues, Boschung managed to obtain a drive at Campos Racing for the 2017 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[11] However, Boschung's maiden F2 campaign would not go so well, with the Swiss racer failing to threaten the points at all in the first six races.[12] Yet, a strong weekend at Baku would see Boschung register his first F2 points, before a season best finish of seventh coming at the 2017 Red Bull Ring Feature Race.[13]
