Guilherme Samaia (born 2 October 1996 in São Paulo, Brazil) is a Brazilian racing driver, who competes for Charouz Racing System in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] A multiple single-seater Champion in his native Brazil, Samaia entered F2 in 2020 after impressing both Campos and his sponsors at the 2019 Yas Marina Test.[1][2]

Background[]

Samaia opened his career in karting at the age of fifteen, competing in the Florida Winter Tour alongside Juan Manuel Correa.[3] After just a two seasons in karts, however, Samaia would get his first seat in single seaters, getting a run-out in the Fórmula Junior Brazil at the end of 2013.[3] The Brazilian duly returned to karting for 2014, Samaia got his first full season of single-seater racing in 2015, obtaining an entry in the Formula 3 Brazil Light Series.[3]

European Endeavours: 2015 - 2019[]

Samaia won the Brazil Light Championship in 2015, graduating to Formula 3 Brasil the following season.[3] Second in that Championship showed Samaia's potential, with the Brazilian youth duly dominating the following season to claim the Brazilian F3 Championship in 2017.[3] With that Samaia set his sights on Europe, gaining a seat in the BRDC British Formula 3 for the rest of the season, finishing thirteenth.[3]

Samaia would also compete in the Spanish Formula 3 Championship and the Euroformula Open Championship in 2017, although he was only able to compete in handful of races.[3] Regardless, he returned to both series in 2018, claiming sixth in Euroformula and fifth in Spanish F3, earning him a third Euroformula season in 2019.[3] However, after signing a deal to compete for a full season, Samaia would drop out of the Championship mid-season.[3]

Formula 2 History[]

Samaia got his first chance to drive an FIA Formula 2 Championship at the 2019 Yas Marina Test with Campos Racing, staged at the Yas Marina Circuit at the end of the 2019 season.[1][2] After a strong showing, Campos opted to sign Samaia for the 2020 Championship partnering the Brazilian rookie with F2 veteran Jack Aitken.[1] The Brazilian youth would go on to have a quiet debut weekend in Austria, claiming sixteenth and fifteenth in the opening two rounds.[4]

Rookie Ramble: 2020[]

Another quiet weekend for Samaia would follow at the second round at the Red Bull Ring, with the Brazilian racer again failing to threaten the points in either race.[5] At the Hungaroring Samaia's only incident of note would be a spin in qualifying that caused a red flag, with the #10 Campos again running at the back of the field throughout.[6] The next three rounds would again see Samaia run at the back of the field without drama, with the Brazilian youth only able to match his best finish of the season of fifteenth in the run.[7]

At the Spa meeting Samaia would cause his second red flag of the campaign, an engine failure in qualifying causing disruption for the rest of the field.[8] A stall and then another engine issue would cause Samaia to suffer his first retirement of the campaign in the Spa Feature, before the Brazilian climbed to fifteenth in the Sprint.[9] Monza would then see Samaia claim his best finish of the season, fourteenth, in the Sprint Race, although the Brazilian youth would fail to threaten the points in either race.[10]

After another anonymous run at the back in both of the Mugello races, Samaia would suffer his first non-mechanical retirement, tangling with Jake Hughes at the start of the 2020 Sochi Sprint Race to end his race on the opening tour.[11] The Brazilian youth would then end the campaign in Bahrain with four pointless races at the back of the field, leaving Samaia as the only full-time driver from the 2020 campaign to fail to score a point.[12]

Charouz Progress? 2021[]

Charouz Racing System opted to test Samaia at the 2020 Bahrain Post-Season Test, with the Czech entry duly opting to sign the Brazilian racer alongside new recruit David Beckmann for the 2021 season.[13] After completing the most laps of any driver at the 2021 Bahrain Test in pre-season, Samaia would go on to fight for eleventh in the season opening 2021 Bahrain Sprint Race 1, his best ever F2 finish, although debuting teammate Beckmann would finish on the podium.[14][15] A repeat performance of Samaia would follow in the Second Bahrain Sprint, before a relatively disappointing run to sixteenth in the Feature Race.[16]
