Jack Aitken (born 23 September 1995 in London, UK) is an Anglo-Korean racing driver, who competes for Campos Racing in the 2020 FIA Formula Two Championship.[1] A former Renault Sport Academy member, Aitken arrived in F2 in 2018 as vice-Champion in the GP3 Series, and would partner his GP3 Series winning teammate George Russell in ART's F2 team.[2][3]
Aitken's maiden F2 campaign would be a solid one, as the Brit secured his maiden victory at the 2018 Barcelona Sprint Race.[4] He duly finished the season in eleventh in the Championship with 63 points, although teammate Russell won the Championship.[5]
For 2019 Aitken would move to Campos Racing to partner Dorian Boccolacci, and would soon emerge as one of the lead drivers in the field.[6] Indeed, Aitken claimed three wins including his maiden Feature win en-route to fifth in the Championship, although he would not challenge for the title itself.[7]
After the RSA terminated their backing of Aitken, the Brit secured a deal to work as the Williams F1 Team's test and reserve driver, alongside a second full F2 campaign with Campos.[1][8]
Background[]
Formula Two History[]
Aitken's second place in the 2017 GP3 Series prompted ART Grand Prix to promote the Anglo-Korean racer into the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2018 alongside GP3 Champion and teammate George Russell.[3]
ARTisan: 2018[]
Campos Campaigner: 2019[]
2019 saw Aitken leave the ART setup after two years, instead signing with Campos Racing to partner Dorian Boccolacci for the 2019 season.[6]
Williams Wings: 2020[]
Aitken and the RSA parted ways ahead of the 2020 season, although Aitken quickly secured a role as test and reserve driver for the Williams F1 Team instead.[8] That subsequently helped Aitken to secure a renewal of his F2 seat with Campos for the 2020 season, with the Brit partnering F2 rookie Guilherme Samaia.[1]
Post Formula Two Career[]
Between 2018 and 2019 Aitken would serve as a test and reserve driver for the Renault F1 Team in Formula One, although he would not take part in any Free Practice sessions.[9] After leaving the Renault Sport Academy Aitken would sign a deal with the Williams F1 Team to serve as their test and reserve driver in 2020, attending every F1 round.[8]
