Jack Doohan (born 20 January 2003 in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) is an Australian racing driver, who competes in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Virtuosi Racing.[1] The runner-up in the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship and son of motorcycle legend Mick Doohan, Doohan would get his first taste of F2 during the 2021 season.[2]
Doohan, as a reward for his efforts in F3, was handed his debut by MP Motorsport for the final two rounds of the 2021 season, as the Australian youth was drafted in to replace Richard Verschoor.[2] Doohan would go on to finish in fifth in only his second start, with a further points finish at the final round earning him nineteenth in the Championship.[3]
Doohan was also a member of the Red Bull Junior Team at the time of his F2 debut, before he signed up to the Alpine Academy in 2022.[4][5]
Background[]
Doohan began his career in karting in his native Australia, although the Australian youth would quickly shift to compete in both North America and Europe in his early teen years.[6] At the age of fifteen Doohan graduated to single-seaters after signing with the Red Bull Junior Team, with the Australian youth entering the F4 British Championship.[4][6] Doohan would ultimately finish in fifth in British F4, a point behind teammate Dennis Hauger, while also making several appearances in the ADAC and Italian F4 series.[6]
F3 Fix: 2019 - 2021[]
The 2019 season saw Doohan move into the F3 Asian Championship, with the Australian racer ultimately finishing as runner-up, while also claiming eleventh in the Euroformula Open Championship.[6] Doohan would then compete in the 2019-20 edition of F3 Asia as it switched to a winter format, and would again finish as runner-up, before joining HWA Racelab in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the 2020 season.[6] A difficult rookie season saw Doohan rarely threaten the points, with the Australian coming closest to scoring with an eleventh place finish in the final race of the season.[6]
The 2021 season saw Doohan switch to the Trident squad, where upon the Australian racer would mount a mid-season bid for the title.[6] Ultimately, Doohan would missout on the title to fellow Red Bull junior Hauger, having secured four victories across the campaign.[6]
Formula 2 History[]
Doohan was offered the chance to complete the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship towards the end of the campaign, as MP Motorsport sought to replace the budget hampered Richard Verschoor.[2] The Australian duly signed up, and was joined by F3 teammate Clément Novalak for the final two rounds of the 2021 season, with the duo making their debut at the Jeddah Sprint Race 1.[2]
Cameo Challenger: 2021[]
Virtuosi Valiance: 2022[]
At the end of the 2021 season Doohan would break his ties with the Red Bull Junior Team, instead signing with the Alpine Academy whom had supported compatriot Oscar Piastri to the 2021 F2 title.[5] The French based driver programme would subsequently aid Doohan in securing a seat with Virtuosi Racing for the 2022 season, with the Australian youth partnered by Marino Sato at the British squad for the campaign.[1] Doohan subsequently made his debut with Virtuosi at the 2021 Yas Marina Test at the end of 2021, and would top the times on the final day of the three-day test.[7]
