Jehan Daruvala (born 1 October 1998 in Mumbai, India) is an Indian racing driver who competes with Prema Racing in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] A member of the Red Bull Junior Team, Daruvala arrived in F2 in 2020 after finishing third in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2019.[2][3]
Daruvala was signed by Carlin ahead of the 2020 campaign, with his Red Bull funding seeing him form an all-Red Bull backed effort alongside Yuki Tsunoda.[2] Daruvala would go on to have a relatively strong rookie season, culminating in victory at the 2020 Sakhir Sprint Race, although he would be heavily outscored by teammate Tsunoda.[4]
Carlin and Red Bull would both opt to retain Daruvala for the 2021 season, with the former signing ex-Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum to partner the Indian racer for the season.[1] Daruvala would go on to add two more wins to his tally during his sophomore F2 campaign, en-route to seventh in the Championship, although he would be outperformed by Ticktum.[5]
For 2022 Daruvala secured a seat with the defending Teams' Champions Prema Racing, who partnered him with reigning F3 Champion Dennis Hauger for the Indian pilot's third campaign.[6]
Background[]
Daruvala began karting at the fairly late age of thirteen in 2011, but would quickly emerge as a front runner in the categories he raced in.[7] In 2015 the Indian racer would fully commit to racing in Europe, taking part in the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC, Alps and Eurocup Championships.[7] His maiden season saw him focus primarily on the NEC, finishing fifth with 194.5 points.[7]
F3 Foundation[]
Daruvala would open his 2016 campaign with a run to second in the Toyota Racing Series, before taking on the same FR 2.0 programmes that he had in 2015.[7] Finishing fourth in the NEC, Daruvala move into the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for 2017, although he again ran in the TRS, claiming fifth.[7] Sixth at the end of the 2017 F3 Europe Championship earned Daruvala another season in the Championship for 2018.[7]
2018 saw Daruvala secure a second F3 win en-route to tenth in the Championship, while also getting a chance to run in the GP3 Series at the season finale.[7] The Indian racer duly signed up for the GP3 Series in 2019 as it transformed in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and would go on to finish third in the inaugural F3 Championship.[7] That earned him the attention of the Red Bull, who signed the Indian racer up to the Red Bull Junior Team in February 2020.[3]
Formula 2 History[]
Daruvala was signed by Carlin ahead of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, with the Indian racer partnered by fellow Red Bull Junior Team member Yuki Tsunoda.[2] He duly impressed at the 2020 Bahrain Test by setting the fastest lap on the second day of the test, although he and Tsunoda would be equally matched throughout.[8] The Indian racer would have to wait to make his F2 debut, however, the with the 2020 season getting delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.[9]
Steady Gains: 2020[]
Daruvala opened the season with a twelfth place on his debut at the Red Bull Ring, before an anonymous run to sixteenth in the Sprint Race.[9] At the second race weekend in Austria the Indian youth would show stronger pace, although it was teammate Tsunoda who stole the show, narrowly missing out on a maiden victory in the Spielberg Feature.[10] Daruvala would have to wait until the Hungaroring weekend to claim his first points finish, recovering from causing a red flag in qualifying to secure sixth place in the Feature Race using the alternate tyre strategy.[11]
The following round in Silverstone would again see Daruvala fight for points, claiming fourth place in the Sprint Race after a lurid spin for Guanyu Zhou late on.[12] A run of six pointless races would follow for Daruvala, before the Indian racer returned to the points at Monza after finishing tenth in the Feature Race.[13] The Indian racer would then secure sixth place in the Monza Sprint, before almost copying those results in Mugello, finishing tenth and seventh in those two races.[14]
Daruvala held his ground valiantly to deny Schumacher and claim his maiden F2 podium late on in Bahrain.
It was at the Sochi meeting that Daruvala finally found some form, finishing just 0.006s behind teammate Tsunoda in qualifying as they locked-out the front row.[15] Unfortunately for the Indian youth his hopes of a maiden victory were scuppered by an early move from Mick Schumacher, who went on to win the race, with Daruvala instead falling to fifth after making an early stop.[16] A maiden podium would then follow for Daruvala in Bahrain, the Indian racer battling to third in the race, before fending off a charging Schumacher late-on as the German racer had superior tyre grip after a late stop.[17]
Daruvala would continue to get involved in the title fight in the Bahrain Sprint, getting spun out of the race following contact with Callum Ilott, while he and Ilott were both fighting Schumacher.[18] A run to seventh in the penultimate race of the season would leave Daruvala on the front row for the season ending 2020 Sakhir Sprint Race, with the Indian racer briefly dropping to third at the start, before elbowing his way past both Schumacher and Dan Ticktum to claim his maiden victory.[4] That result elevated Daruvala to twelfth in the final Championship standings, albeit with around a third of the points of teammate Tsunoda.
Carlin Composure: 2021[]
Re-signed by both the RBJT and Carlin for the 2021 season, Daruvala would again run at the head of the field at the Pre-season test, although he would be outpaced by new teammate Ticktum.[1] The Indian racer duly started the season in strong fashion, narrowly missing out on victory at the season opening 2021 Bahrain Sprint Race 1 after Liam Lawson put up an excellent defence of the lead in the closing stages.[19] Fourth place for Daruvala would follow in the 2021 Bahrain Sprint Race 2, which saw the Indian racer again briefly battle for the lead, before claiming sixth place in the Feature Race.[20]
Prema Performer: 2022[]
The 2022 season saw Daruvala sign with Prema Racing for the campaign, as the Italian squad formed a new line-up to replace the outgoing Oscar Piastri and Robert Shwartzman.[6] Partnering 2021 F3 Champion and fellow Red Bull Junior Dennis Hauger, Daruvala would open the campaign with a second place in the season opening 2022 Bahrain Sprint Race, having fought with Richard Verschoor and Liam Lawson for the lead in the early stages.[21]
