Liam Lawson (born 11 February 2002 in Hastings, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand) is a New Zealand born racing driver, who competes in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship for Carlin.[1] A Red Bull Junior Team member, Lawson would pair his F2 campaign with driving duties in the DTM during his rookie F2 season in 2021, having graduated from the FIA Formula 3 Championship.[2][3]
Lawson's F2 career began in 2021, when the New Zealander signed for Hitech Grand Prix to partner Jüri Vips for the season.[4] Lawson would win on his debut at the 2021 Bahrain Sprint Race 1, although he would only stand on the podium twice more before the end of the season as he ended the year in ninth in the Championship.[5]
Background[]
Lawson's career began in karting, with the the New Zealander racing from the age of seven through to his mid teens, taking two national titles.[3] In 2015 Lawson graduated to single seaters, taking part in the Formula First Manfield Winter Series in his native New Zealand, finishing as runner-up.[3] That earned him a drive in the full New Zealand Formula First Championship for 2015/16, with the Kiwi going on to claim sixth overall.[3]
Young Charger: 2016 - 2017[]
For 2016 Lawson would remain in New Zealand, entering the NF F1600 Championship, with a dominant run seeing him claim fourteen wins from fifteen races to become the youngest ever winner of a Formula Ford championship.[3] In 2017 Lawson moved across to Australia to compete in Formula 4, finishing second, as well as making several appearances in Formula Vee.[3] With that, Lawson secured enough funding to move to Europe for 2018, although he would open that season with a brief run in the F3 Asian Championship.[3]
European Horizons: 2018 - 2020[]
Claiming two wins in his three Asian F3 appearances, Lawson went on to claim second behind Lirim Zendeli in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship with three wins.[3] His 2019 season would open with an impressive run to the title in the Toyota Racing Series in his native New Zealand, which earned him the attention and backing of Red Bull, who signed him to the Red Bull Junior Team.[6] For the rest of 2019, Lawson would race in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, finishing eleventh, and the Euroformula Open Championship, claiming second.[3]
2020 saw Lawson just fall shy of defending his TRS crown, finishing second to Igor Fraga, before a move to Hitech Grand Prix for his sophomore season of FIA F3.[3] That season saw Lawson claim three victories en-route to fifth in the championship, with Red Bull opting to renew his contract at the end of the season.[3]
