Logan Sargeant (born 31 December 2000 in Boca Raton, Florida, United States) is an American racing driver, who competes in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Carlin.[1] A veteran of the FIA Formula 3 Championship, Sargeant completed the 2020 Bahrain Post-Season Test as part of an evaluation of potential drivers for the 2021 season, although the American youth ultimately lacked the budget to secure a seat.[2]
Despite missing out on a race seat, Sargeant would make one appearance in the 2021 season, taking over from Jake Hughes for the Jeddah round towards the end of the season.[3] Making three starts Sargeant would fail to score any points, although the American racer did get the chance to speak with various teams about a seat for 2022.[4]
In October 2021 Sargeant secured a place in the Williams Driver Academy, with that deal announced at the 2021 United States Grand Prix.[5]
Background[]
Sargeant began his career in karting, and would go on to become the first American driver to win an FIA accredited championship since Lake Speed in 1978 when he claimed the 2015 CIK-FIA World KF-Junior Championship.[6] In the winter of 2016 Sargeant graduated into single-seaters, entering the F4 UAE Championship in which the American youth would finish as runner-up.[6] For the 2017 season Sargeant would move into the British F4 Championship, finishing third, with appearances in various other series including the Formula Renault Eurocup.[6]
An American Hope: 2018 - 2020[]
Sargeant would opt to compete in the Eurocup full time for the 2018 campaign, with three victories carrying the American racer to fourth, as well as fifth in the sister NEC series.[6] 2019 saw Sargeant secure a seat in the inaugural FIA Formula 3 Championship, resulting in a nineteenth place finish with five points prior to a run to third in the Macau Grand Prix.[6] A move to the imperious Prema Racing F3 squad for 2020 would allow Sargeant to challenge for the FIA F3 title, although the American youth would ultimately finish in third after the title was decided on the final day.[6]
Formula 2 History[]
Sargeant was offered the chance to complete the 2020 Bahrain Post-Season Test by Campos Racing at the end of the 2020 season after finishing third in the FIA Formula 3 Championship that year.[2] The American youth would ultimately be out-paced by the already confirmed Ralph Boschung across the three-days, before revealing that he lacked the funding to secure a full race seat in F2 for the 2021 season.[7]
HWA Cameo: 2021[]
Despite missing out on an F2 seat for 2021 Sargeant would race in FIA Formula 3 once again, claiming one more victory towards the end of the season.[6] Once the F3 season finished, however, Sargeant would be offered the chance to compete for HWA Racelab at the Jeddah round, taking over from Jake Hughes.[3] Sargeant spent his debut race fighting towards the back of the field in the Jeddah Sprint Race 1, before retiring from the second race with an engine issue.[8]
Sargeant would go onto finish in fourteenth in the bizarrely short 2021 Jeddah Feature Race, notably pulling moves on Roy Nissany before the race was ended by a red flag.[4] The American pilot was then replaced at HWA by Hughes for the finale in Yas Marina, although the American racer would attend the final round in order to take part at the 2021 Yas Marina Test.[9]
Carlin Contender?: 2022[]
Ahead of the 2021 Yas Marina Test Sargeant was announced as a driver for Carlin for the 2022 season, later partnered by Liam Lawson.[1]
