Marcus Armstrong (born 29 July 2000 in Christchurch, New Zealand), is a New Zealand born racing driver, who competes in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Hitech Grand Prix.[1] A former member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, Armstrong arrived in F2 having finished as runner-up to fellow FDA member Robert Shwartzman in the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship.[2][3]
Armstrong's F2 career began in 2020, when the New Zealander signed with ART Grand Prix alongside Christian Lundgaard.[4] A strong start to the campaign saw Armstrong claim two podiums in the first four races, although he would only claim a handful of points over the rest of the campaign en-route to thirteenth.[5]
For 2021 Armstrong moved across to DAMS for the campaign, partnering Roy Nissany for the full season.[6] Another topsy-turvy season would follow for Armstrong, with the New Zealander claiming his maiden victory, but again struggle to score regular points as he finished in thirteenth once again.[7]
The FDA and Armstrong parted ways ahead of the 2022 season, although the New Zealander would still secure a seat in F2 at Hitech Grand Prix alongside Jüri Vips.[1]
Background[]
Armstrong began karting at the age of ten in his native New Zealand, and would claim his maiden Championship title in 2011.[8] After a further three seasons Armstrong secured his first seat in a single-seater, taking part in the 2014-15 New Zealand Formula Ford Championship, albeit while remaining in his various karting series.[8] After claiming a single win Armstrong dovetailed a season in the 2014-15 Toyota Finance 86 Championship alongside another year in karting, claiming three wins in the former series.[8]
European Endeavours: 2016[]
For the 2016 season Armstrong fully committed to racing in Europe, competing in various series including the German Kart Championship, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and NEC.[8] He would also get a run in the Autumn edition of the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship, although he would fail to win in any of his single-seater series.[8] Regardless, Armstrong was one of five young drivers to be selected for a young driver test with the Ferrari Driver Academy in November 2016, and duly earned a spot in the FDA.[2][8]
Ferrari Formula: 2017-2019[]
With Ferrari backing Armstrong joined the Prema Powerteam in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship for 2017, finishing second.[8] Armstrong also competed in the Italian F4 Championship, claiming the title, while also starting the season with a run to fourth in the Toyota Racing Series.[8] As a result, Armstrong was promoted to Prema's FIA Formula 3 European Championship team for 2018, while also getting the chance to run in the TRS for a second season.[8]
Armstrong would claim a single win in his maiden F3 campaign with Prema, battling to fifth in the Championship as teammate Mick Schumacher claimed the crown.[8][9] Armstrong would remain in F3 for the 2019 season, staying with Prema, and duly diced for the title with teammate and fellow FDA member Robert Shwartzman.[3] That duel was ultimately won by Shwartzman, although both the Russian racer and Armstrong would be promoted to F2 for 2020.[3]
Formula 2 History[]
Armstrong got his first taste of the FIA Formula 2 Championship at the 2019 Yas Marina Test at Yas Marina, driving for ART Grand Prix alongside Christian Lundgaard at the end of the 2019 campaign.[10] Armstrong and Lundgaard performed well at the test, and were both signed by ART as their full time drivers for the 2020 Season, replacing defending F2 Champion Nyck de Vries and Nikita Mazepin.[4]
ART Arts: 2020[]
Armstrong would open his F2 account with a podium finish on his debut, finishing behind Callum Ilott after Mick Schumacher spun off in the closing stages of the 2020 Red Bull Ring Feature Race.[11]
DAMS Dalliance: 2021[]
The 2021 season saw Armstrong move to DAMS for the season, joining Roy Nissany at the squad for his second F2 campaign.[6]
Hitech Heights? 2022[]
After losing his FDA backing at the end of 2021 and leaving the DAMS squad, Armstrong secured a seat with Hitech Grand Prix for the 2022 season, uniting with Jüri Vips for a third assault at F2.[1]
