Matteo Nannini (born 10 July 2003 before Faenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy) is an Italian racing driver, who is set to make his FIA Formula 2 Championship debut with HWA Racelab at the start of 2021.[1] The nephew of former Formula One driver Alessandro Nannini, Nannini entered F2 knowing he would also complete a full season of FIA Formula 3 for the campaign.[1]
Background[]
Nannini began his career in karting at the age of six, winning numerous titles in his native Italy as he rose through the ranks.[2] 2019 saw Nannini graduate to competing in single seaters, signing up to Formula Renault Eurocup, the Formula Regional European Championship, F4 Spanish Championship and the Formula 4 UAE Championship.[2] The Italian youth would go on to claim the F4 UAE title, while running to thirteenth in the Formula Regional European Championship, alongside one-off appearances in the other programmes.[2]
F3 Fortunes: 2020 - 2021[]
Nannini was promoted to the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the 2020 season, and would struggle in the opening rounds as one of the youngest drivers in the field.[2] A stronger second half saw him claim one podium finish en-route to eighteenth, earning him a second season of F3 in 2021, as well as a third straight promotion up the FIA ladder to F2.[2]
Formula Two History[]
Nannini would first drive an FIA Formula 2 Championship car at the 2020 Bahrain Post-Season Test, running for HWA Racelab where he was relatively evenly matched with F2 veteran Roberto Merhi.[3] HWA duly opted to sign Nannini to their F2 squad for the 2021 season, partnering him with compatriot and fellow F3 graduate Alessio Deledda.[1]
