Olli Caldwell (born 11 June 2002 in Winchester, Hampshire, United Kingdom) is a British racing driver, who competes in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Campos Racing.[1] Caldwell made his F2 debut at the end of the 2021 season with Campos, having replaced David Beckmann for the final two rounds.[2]
Caldwell as signed as a member of the Alpine Academy ahead of his first full F2 campaign in 2022, having claimed eighth in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2021.[3]
Background[]
Beginning his career in karting at the age of ten, Caldwell would compete in numerous series, culminating in finishing as runner-up in the Rotax Euro Challenge in 2016.[4] 2016 would also see Caldwell graduate to car racing, taking a seat in the Ginetta Junior Championship, finishing in nineteenth, before moving into single seaters for 2017.[4] The F4 British and Italian F4 Championships were Caldwell's main entertainment for the season, with the Brit finishing in fourteenth and eleventh in each series.[4]
Varied Value: 2018 - 2021[]
Caldwell entered the F4 UAE Championship during the winter of 2017, finishing seventh with three victories, before completing a dual campaign in Italian F4 and ADAC F4 in 2018.[4] The Brit ultimately claimed third in the Italian series with four wins, before stepping over to the Formula Regional European Championship in 2019.[4] Finishing fifth, and also making his debut at the Macau Grand Prix, Caldwell would earn a spot in the FIA Formula 3 Championship for the 2020 season.[4]
A quiet rookie season in FIA F3 saw Caldwell finish in sixteenth in the Championship, while also making a cameo in the Intercontinental GT Challenge.[4] For 2021 Caldwell would move to the Championship leading Prema Racing squad in F3, securing one win as he improved to eighth in the title hunt.[4] The Brit would also make his FIA World Endurance Championship debut in the LMP2 class during the 2021 season.[4]
Formula 2 History[]
Towards the end of the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship Caldwell got involved in the late-season shuffle of drivers, as several teams and drivers ran into issues during the two month break.[2] The Brit was signed by Campos Racing for the final two rounds of the 2021 campaign, replacing David Beckmann at the Spanish squad and partnering Ralph Boschung.[2]
Caldwell Cameo: 2021[]
Caldwell's F2 debut came in the 2021 Jeddah Sprint Race 1, with the Brit running at the back of the field throughout having struggled in qualifying with tyre temperature.[5]
Campos Cause: 2022[]
Campos Racing would retain Caldwell's services for the 2022 season, with the Brit again partnering Boschung in what was set to be a full season in F2.[1] Caldwell also secured a spot in the Alpine Academy for the season, joining Jack Doohan as the French squad's representatives in F2.[3]
