Richard Verschoor (born 16 December 2000 in Benschop, Utrecht, Netherlands) is a Dutch racing driver, who competes for MP Motorsport in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] A former Red Bull Junior Team member, Verschoor attended four F2 tests as a driver for MP Motorsport before getting his race debut at the start of 2021, having first driven an F2 car at the 2018 Yas Marina Test.[2]

Background[]

Verschoor began his career in karting at the age of ten, racing across the Netherlands and later Europe until the end of 2015, finishing third in the European CIK-FIA KF Championship in that season.[3] In 2016 Verschoor signed up to the SMP F4 Championship with MP Motorsport, and duly claimed a spot in the Red Bull Junior Team after claiming victory on his debut.[3][4] Verschoor would go on to claim the SMP F4 title in 2016, alongside a dominant championship run in the Spanish F4 Championship, with outings in the Italian and ADAC F4 series to boot.[3]

Dutch Dreamer: 2017 - 2020[]

For 2017 Verschoor moved into the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, after opening the season with a run to third in the Toyota Racing Series.[3] Unfortunately for Verschoor he would fail to hit the heights of 2016 in FR Eurocup, finishing ninth which prompted Red Bull to drop him from their roster.[3] For 2018 Verschoor swapped to Josef Kaufmann Racing from MP Motorsport, having again opened his campaign with a run to second in the TRS, although Verschoor would again rarely fight for the podium during the season.[3]

Midway through the 2018 season a shuffle of drivers within the MP Motorsport squad saw Verschoor offered the chance to join the GP3 Series, with the Dutchman taking over from the Spa round onward.[3] Verschoor went on to claim one podium finish, prompting MP to hire him a full campaign in the new FIA Formula 3 Championship for 2019.[3] A mixed rookie season would follow for Verschoor, although he would end the season with victory on his debut in the Macau Grand Prix.[3]

A second season of FIA Formula 3 would follow for Verschoor in 2020, although despite finishing second in the second race of the season, the Dutchman failed to mount a title challenge.[3]

Formula 2 History[]

Verschoor was offered the chance to drive an FIA Formula 2 Championship car at the end of the 2018 season, after MP Motorsport offered him one day at the 2018 Yas Marina Test.[2] The Dutchman went on to set a time just two tenths off of Dorian Boccolacci, the fastest of the MP drivers at the test, before narrowly missing out on a race seat with MP for 2019 to Mahaveer Raghunathan.[5] Regardless, Verschoor would complete both of the pre-season tests with MP ahead of the 2019 season, outpacing both Raghunathan and Jordan King in both of the tests on one-lap pace.[5]

After sitting out any running of an F2 car in 2020, Verschoor was given the chance to drive for MP Motorsport again at the 2021 Bahrain Test.[6] The Dutchman duly became a favourite to claim the #11 MP seat for the 2021 season, with MP Motorsport the last of the teams to announce their full driver line-up.[6]
