Robert Mikhailovich Shwartzman (Ро́берт Миха́йлович Шва́рцман in Russian; born 16 September 1999 in St. Petersburg, Northwestern, Russia) is a Russian racing driver who competes in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Prema Racing.[1] A Ferrari Driver Academy member, Shwartzman made his F2 debut at the start of the 2020 season off the back of winning the FIA Formula 3 Championship.[2][3]
Shwartzman was signed by Prema ahead of the 2020 campaign, with the Russian racer partnering fellow FDA member Mick Schumacher for his rookie campaign.[2] Shwartzman would go on to claim victory in only his third race, with three further wins across the condensed campaign leaving him in fourth in the championship.[4]
Prema would retain Shwartzman for the 2021 season, with the Russian racer taking over as team leader ahead of new teammate Oscar Piastri for his sophomore season.[1]
Background[]
Shwartzman began his career in karting at the age of five, racing across Europe until 2014, when he secured his first season in single-seaters.[5] Entering the final six rounds of the Italian F4 Championship, Shwartzman impressed enough to secure a full Italian F4 seat in 2015, and would go on to secure third in the Championship with two wins.[5] The Russian racer also completed a full season in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship, finishing fourth in that series.[5]
A Ferrari Future: 2016-2019[]
2016 saw Shwartzman secure a seat in the sister Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and NEC Championships, finishing in the middle of the pack in both.[5] He remained in both series for 2017, and duly finished third in the Eurocup after claiming six victories.[5] His success brought Shwartzman the attention of Ferrari, who duly signed the Russian racer to the Ferrari Driver Academy at the end of 2017.[3]
Ferrari moved Shwartzman into the Toyota Racing Series to open the 2018 season, with the Russian racer duly securing the title in his first season.[5] With that Shwartzman spent the rest of 2018 fighting to third in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, behind fellow FDA member Mick Schumacher and Dan Ticktum.[5] For 2019 the Russian racer was moved to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, which saw the Russian racer sweep to the title in his rookie season with 212 points.[5]
Formula 2 History[]
Shwartzman took part in his first FIA Formula 2 Championship session at the 2019 Yas Marina Test, having already been signed to the Prema Racing team for 2020.[2][6] The Russian racer performed well against teammate Mick Schumacher, with the duo heading into the 2020 season on an even footing, both with backing from the Ferrari Driver Academy.[2]
Rookie Runner: 2020[]
A Ferrari Favourite: 2021[]
After being overlooked for a Formula One seat for 2021, Shwartzman was given a sophomore season of F2 by Prema, who partnered him with Shwartzman's F3 successor Oscar Piastri for the season.[1]
