Roy Nissany (born 30 November 1994 in Tel Aviv, Gush Dan, Israel; רוי ניסני in Hebrew) is an Israeli racing driver whom competes for DAMS in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship.[1] Son of Chanoch Nissany, the first Israeli driver to take part at a Formula One Grand Prix weekend, Nissany arrived in F2 with a solid, if unspectacular, background in other junior series.[1]
Nissany originally debuted in the 2018 season, having signed up to Campos Racing alongside Luca Ghiotto.[2] However, a miserable season saw Nissany struggle to match the pace of the rest of the field, and after a single points finish the Israeli racer was dropped from the team before the end of the season.[3]
After sitting out the 2019 season Nissany returned to the F2 paddock in 2020, after Trident signed him to partner Marino Sato.[4] The Israeli pilot would go on to have another campaign in the lower end of the midfield, although he did improve to nineteenth in the Championship.[5]
For 2021 Nissany moved to DAMS for the season, partnering Marcus Armstrong, and duly earned his maiden podium finish at the 2021 Monaco Sprint Race 1 in the first part of the season.[6] However, the Israeli pilot would otherwise struggle for points across the rest of the season, claiming only two more points finishes en-route to sixteenth in the Championship.[7]
2022 saw Nissany retain his spot at DAMS for the season, as the French squad signed Ayumu Iwasa to partner him for his fourth F2 campaign.[8]
Aside from F2, Nissany is a member of the Williams Driver Academy, having signed for the British squad's development team in 2020.[9]
Background[]
Nissany began karting at the age of four, before moving into car racing in 2010, joining the Formula Lista Junior series.[1] An eighth place finish in that Championship saw Nissany move into the ADAC Formel Masters for 2011, with Nissany proving to be a consistent points scorer.[1] A second season in the ADAC series saw Nissany register his first win, and secure a spot in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for 2013.[1]
A Formula Focus[]
It proved to be a quiet debut season in F3 Europe for Nissany, with the Israeli racer only scoring points in the second half of the season.[1] Nissany was marginally more competitive in his second season, but ultimately decided to take up a seat in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2015.[1] A stronger campaign there saw Nissany claim a maiden podium finish, prompting the Israeli racer to stay with the series into 2016.[1]
Nissany's second season in the newly renamed "Formula V8 3.5 Series" saw the Israeli racer claim his first wins since 2012, en-route to fourth in the Championship.[1] A third season saw Nissany claim another win, but slip to fifth in the Championship despite scoring more points.[1] Regardless, Nissany would gain a promotion at the end of the season, obtaining a seat in Formula 2 for 2018.[1]
Formula 2 History[]
Campos Vexatec Racing would offer Nissany a drive in the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship, partnering the Israeli racer with Luca Ghiotto.[2] However, while Ghiotto proved to be a point scorer as expected, Nissany seemed to struggle on his debut weekend, not threatening the points at all in Bahrain.[10] It was an even less impressive display in Baku for Nissany, the Israeli racer retiring from both races with accident and gearbox damage.[11]
Missed Hopes: 2020[]
After sitting out the 2019 season, Nissany secured a return to the F2 field for the 2020 season, joining Trident alongside Marino Sato.[4]
DAMS Dues: 2021[]
For 2021 Nissany would move to DAMS for the season, partnering sophomore driver Marcus Armstrong for the season with the hope that joining a former title contending team would boost his chances.[6]
Four Score: 2022[]
Nissany would enter his fourth F2 campaign in 2022, as DAMS retained the Israeli pilot to partner rookie Ayumu Iwasa for the season.[8]
Post Formula 2 Career[]
Nissany would test a Formula One car for the first time in 2014, taking part in a private test of a Sauber C31 at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain.[12] In 2019 Nissany was chosen by Williams to take part in the Young Driver Test at the end of the 2019 season, before signing up to their Driver Academy in January 2020.[12][9] 2020 and 2021 saw Nissany make several appearances in Free Practice at several Grand Prix for Williams, as well as take part on the first day of the Bahrain Test at the start of the 2021 season.[12]
Nissany retained his WDA status for the 2022 season.[13]
