The Yas Marina Circuit (حلبة مرسى ياس in Arabic) is a permanent racing circuit used by the FIA Formula 2 Championship, located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.[1] The host of the annual Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for F1 since 2009, Yas Marina has hosted F2 and its predecessor the GP2 Series since 2010, and was only missed from the F2 calendar in 2020 due to the hastily re-arrange calendar around the COVID-19 Pandemic.[2]
The venue also traditionally hosts GP2 and F2's annual post-season test, which sees teams test drivers who they wish to evaluate for a drive in the following GP2/F2 campaign.[3]
Background[]
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix concept was first mooted in 2007, and after F1 staged a demonstration named the Formula One Festival in the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on 3 February 2007 it was duly announced that F1, the FIA and Abu Dhabi, had signed a deal for a Grand Prix to be staged as the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.[4] A new circuit, the Yas Marina Circuit, was designed by Hermann Tilke on Yas Island, centred on the Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi and running around the Yas Island marina, and was opened a week before the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of the 2009 F1 season.[4] After its successful debut as the season finale for F1 in 2009, the FIA and Formula Motorsport Limited began negotiations about taking the GP2 Series to the circuit, beginning in 2010.[5]
Formula 2 History[]
The Yas Marina Circuit hosted its first FIA Formula 2 Championship race in 2017, staging the F2 season finale which would also be the last races for the Dallara GP2/11 chassis.[6] The circuit would also host the annual post-season test, with it reprising those roles in both 2018 and 2019.[7] The hurridly re-arranged 2020 calendar saw the Yas Marina Circuit missout on a spot on the calendar, before it was restored the F2 calendar in 2021, returning to its role as the host of the season finale and the post-season test.[2]
